Maty Mauk Reinstated by Missouri: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
University of Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk has reportedly been reinstated by the football program after he was suspended for an undisclosed violation of team rules, according to the Columbia Daily Tribune's David Morrison.
Morrison added that Mauk's father, Mike, said his son will remain at the school through the spring semester.
Mauk was originally suspended four games before he was reinstated Oct. 25. However, former Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel suspended the signal-caller again a week later, with the second punishment spanning the remainder of the regular season.
In four appearances this season, Mauk completed 51.8 percent of his passes for 654 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Mauk looked like the real deal as a sophomore, completing a career-best 53.4 percent of his passes for 2,648 yards and 25 touchdowns with 13 interceptions while rushing for 373 yards and two scores.
But his truncated junior campaign cast him in a bad light, and freshman Drew Lock was handed the reins to the offense.
"We don't overlook things," Pinkel said after Mauk's second suspension, per the Associated Press (via ESPN). "We don't cover things up. We do what's right. A lot of other places would find ways to get the problem solved without doing what we do, but we don't do that at Missouri. I've never done that; I never will."
The Tigers sputtered with Lock leading the charge, but it's hard to fault the true freshman for struggling after assuming the starting role on such short notice. During Missouri's 5-7 season, which included a 1-7 record in SEC play, Lock completed 49 percent of his passes for 1,332 yards, four touchdowns and eight picks.
Now that Mauk has been reinstated, he figures to have a decent shot at reclaiming the gig as the Tigers prep for the 2016 season.
After Missouri won the Cotton Bowl to cap a 12-2 season in 2013, Mauk led the Tigers to an 11-3 mark with a Citrus Bowl win in 2014. Missouri needs to find some source of stability on offense as it tries to return to form next year.
