Kyler Murray to Oklahoma: Latest Transfer Details, Comments and Reaction
After one disappointing season at Texas A&M, Kyler Murray is headed to Oklahoma. The former 5-star recruit announced his intention to transfer to Norman on Thursday.
"We're very happy to welcome Kyler to our program and we look forward to working with him," Sooners head coach Bob Stoops said, per assistant A.D. Mike Houck.
Murray's transfer comes after a largely lost freshman campaign that saw him struggle to make an impact. He threw for 686 yards and five touchdowns against seven interceptions, adding 335 yards and a score on the ground, but he was never quite able to overtake Kyle Allen.
It seemed the starting job had opened for Murray when Allen announced his surprise transfer in December, but Murray followed suit not long after:

It was a bit of an eye-opening season for the Texas A&M offense, which flourished early in head coach Kevin Sumlin's tenure but struggled in 2015. The Aggies ranked 58th nationally in Football Outsiders' S&P+ ratings on offense.
Murray appeared to be at odds with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, even getting into a verbal altercation during Texas A&M's loss to Alabama. That incident led to his benching against Ole Miss, and Murray also did not appear in the season's final two games.
Landing Murray is a major boon for Oklahoma, which will get one of 2015's biggest recruits with three years of eligibility remaining. Murray will have to sit out the 2016 season, but can use his redshirt year to avoid losing eligibility.
A gifted runner, Murray fits best in an open system where he can allow his feet to flourish. As we saw last season, his passing is still very much a work in progress. The transfer year may wind up being a blessing in disguise, as it will allow him time to develop.
As for Texas A&M, Sumlin's empire is starting to show cracks. Jake Hubenak has suddenly gone from junior college to the Aggies' only real option as a starting quarterback. After A&M posted an 8-4 record in 2015, something seems awry.
