Sturridge Doubtful for Australia Friendly
Thursday, May 26
According to the Daily Mail's Matt Lawton and Sami Mokbel, Sturridge had a scan on Tuesday, and the injury was deemed serious enough to prevent him from training on Wednesday.
Hodgson said Manchester United's Marcus Rashford will "play a serious part" for England against Australia on Friday, per Simon Peach of Press Association.
The Liverpool striker was enjoying his longest spell of fitness in two years after returning to action in February, and he ended the domestic campaign as the Reds' top scorer with 13 goals from just 19 starts, so this latest setback will be a source of huge frustration.
What's more, Lawton and Mokbel report that if he is unable to feature against Australia, Marcus Rashford "will almost certainly start in a 90-minute audition for a place" ahead of Sturridge, so his spot at Euro 2016 could be under threat.
Hodgson also selected Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney as his forwards, and they seem assured of a place assuming they don't pick up an injury prior to the tournament—so realistically, either Sturridge or Rashford will miss out.
Sturridge is almost certainly ahead of the Manchester United forward in Hodgson's thinking, but depending on the severity of his injury, the manager may have little choice but to select Rashford.
The Australia match will be their last chance to impress—England's final squad must be submitted by May 31, before the Three Lions' last warm-up game with Portugal—so the door could be well and truly open for Rashford to show off his talents.
