Does Alabama Have Chance to Flip 4-Star WR Tyler Vaughns from USC?
The last few months before signing day are sure to provide many anxious moments for college coaches across the country and top recruits—even those who have already made a verbal commitment. One player who could have a dilemma on his hands is 4-star receiver and current Southern California pledge Tyler Vaughns.
According to Hank South of BamaOnline, Alabama assistant Tosh Lupoi visited Vaughns on Tuesday. The visit was a productive one for the Tide's pursuit of Vaughns, as the electric playmaker from California scheduled an official visit to Tuscaloosa in January.
Does this mean the Tide are a legit threat in getting Vaughns to flip his pledge?
If there's one school you can't discount with any recruit, it's Alabama—which is enough to make Trojans fans sweat out his recruitment until he signs his letter of intent.
Tide head coach Nick Saban and his staff has proved their ability to flip high-profile prospects over the years.
Alabama has a need at receiver, and it's using the success of current Tide receiver Calvin Ridley—who led the Tide in receiving this year with 75 receptions for 893 yards and five touchdowns as a true freshman—in its pitch to the nation's No. 2 wideout in the 2016 cycle.
"[Lupoi] was just saying I could be the next one and to look what [Calvin] Ridley had done," Vaughns told South. "He said that I can come in and start right away and that I would fit well in Coach [Lane] Kiffin's offense."
The 6'3", 175-pounder—who hauled in 83 receptions for 1,578 yards receiving as a junior—has the potential to make an early impact at the next level.
However, USC made a strong move to stabilize the program by removing the interim tag from new head coach Clay Helton. Additionally, Helton kept receivers coach and ace recruiter Tee Martin on staff, which is something that is important to Vaughns.
"I have an excellent relationship with him and Coach Tee," Vaughns said. "They're the ones who recruited me."
Much like the Tide, the Trojans have a big need for receivers in the current cycle.
As detailed by Ourlads, USC currently has six upperclassmen receivers on the roster and could potentially lose star sophomore JuJu Smith-Schuster to the NFL draft after next season.
While Vaughns is clearly intrigued by the opportunity of playing at Alabama, it would still be a big upset if he lands anywhere other than USC on signing day.
