Clemson's Dabo Swinney Reportedly Wins 2015 Coach of the Year Awards
After leading the Clemson Tigers to a perfect 13-0 record thus far, head coach Dabo Swinney was named college football's 2015 Home Depot Coach of the Year on Wednesday and the Walter Camp Coach of the Year on Thursday.
ESPN's Joe Schad was the first to report that the 46-year-old coach earned the Home Depot honor for the first time in his eight-year career as the head man at Clemson, while the Associated Press' Ralph D. Russo was first to report he won the Walter Camp honor.
The Tigers are the only undefeated team remaining in major college football, and the reigning ACC champions earned the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff by virtue of that.
While that is a major accomplishment for a program that has been criticized for falling short in recent years, Swinney is far from satisfied, according to Dan Hope of the Independent Mail:
"We started talking back on August 3rd, we said 15 for 15. Why not? Dream big. Why don't we be the best ever? There's never been a 15-0 college football team. Why not at Clemson? Our guys are not afraid to dream. They're not afraid to work, and they're not afraid to get off the bank and get out in the deep water every now and then.
"
Getting past Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31 followed by either Alabama or Michigan State in the CFP National Championship Game will be no easy task, but Swinney has arguably the best quarterback in college football at his disposal in the form of Heisman Trophy candidate Deshaun Watson.
Regardless of what Clemson accomplishes moving forward, though, former Texas head coach Mack Brown is among those who are extremely impressed with the job Swinney has done:
Clemson has long been on the fringes of vying for a national title, but Swinney deserves a great deal of credit for getting it over the hump it hasn't cleared for quite some time.
Questions regarding the Tigers' ability to finish will persist if they can't at least get past the Sooners and into the CFP final, but Swinney has helped create a season Clemson fans will never forget no matter what happens in the playoff.
