College Football Rankings 2015: Twitter Reacts to Week 14 AP, Amway Polls
After a Championship Saturday that featured a number of hard-fought, thrilling games, the College Football Playoff matchups are set and the final regular-season Amway and Associated Press polls are in.
The Clemson Tigers claimed the top spot across all major rankings after holding off North Carolina, 45-37, in the ACC championship game. In the CFP semifinals, they'll take on the Oklahoma Sooners, who impressed the coaches enough to take the third spot in the Amway poll.
The Alabama Crimson Tide held down the No. 2 spot with a 29-15 win over the Florida Gators in the SEC championship. The Crimson Tide's opponent in the Cotton Bowl will be the Spartans of Michigan State, who took down the Iowa Hawkeyes, 16-13, on a late L.J. Scott touchdown in the Big Ten championship contest.
Here are the complete Week 14 AP and Amway polls, along with Bleacher Report's own rankings.
Twitter Reaction to Final Polls
The Sooners didn't have a game in Week 14, and yet the Amway coaches still saw fit to put them ahead of the likes of Michigan State in their final list. ESPN's Travis Haney noted on Friday that the Sooners might get some extra love with the way they've been playing:
Michigan State led the way for Big Ten teams, followed by the Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 5 and then Iowa at No. 7 in the Amway poll—the AP felt the Hawkeyes deserved a better ranking in its poll. SB Nation's Alejandro Zuniga noted it was a banner year for the conference overall:
The Stanford Cardinals finished just outside CFP territory at No. 5 in the AP poll and No. 6 in the Amway poll. Despite playing a tough schedule and beating the USC Trojans, 41-22, in the Pac-12 title game on Saturday, the Cardinal couldn't bump anyone out of the top four.
The Cauldron's Andy Glockner did make the case for their inclusion:
ESPN Stats & Info noted Stanford was one of five teams to pull off a major feat this season:
Ohio State didn't get the results it needed on Saturday to have a chance at defending it's championship, though BuckeyeGroves.com's Kevin Noon pointed out at least one rival coach liked them enough to rank them in the top four in Amway voting:
"Utah finishes the regular season No. 20 in the AP poll. Tied with 2010 for highest regular-season finish since 2008. https://t.co/yWcXyrwvTy
— Matthew Piper (@matthew_piper) December 6, 2015"
With little notable movement near the top of the polls, some focused on the back end of the rankings. Matthew Piper of the Salt Lake Tribune noted the Utah Utes put together another strong season:
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers couldn't make the Amway poll, but did snag the 25th and final spot in the AP poll. It's the team's first time ending the season on the AP list. Zach Greenwell of the Bowling Green Daily News noted WKU did a fine job of piling up wins this season:
The Hilltoppers director of athletics was predictably stoked:
The AP and Amway polls are more ceremonial than anything this late in the season, with the CFP rankings garnering the vast majority of people's attention—and rightfully so.
The top four in all rankings are hardly controversial, though calls for expansion will certainly come with excellent teams like Stanford and Ohio State let out of the madness.
