Seth Littrell to North Texas: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction
North Carolina Tar Heels assistant coach Seth Littrell has been named the North Texas Mean Green's new head football coach, the program announced.
Brett McMurphy of ESPN first reported that Littrell, who serves as the assistant head coach for offense and tight ends coach with the Tar Heels, beat out TCU Horned Frogs co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham for the position. The report noted Littrell will still help lead the UNC offense in the ACC title game against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday night.
Littrell joined the North Carolina staff in 2014. This season, he's watched over a unit that ranks 16th in yards per game, which is a key reason the Tar Heels are still alive in the College Football Playoff race. They'll need a victory over the Tigers to complete their case, though.
Before UNC, the 37-year-old offensive guru made stops at Indiana and Arizona as an offensive coordinator and was also an assistant at Texas Tech.
His next task is probably the toughest to date. After finishing up his duties at North Carolina, he'll be asked to reinvent a North Texas program that's made just one bowl appearance since 2005 and finished this season with a 1-11 record.
Littrell has a strong pedigree, and his work with the Tar Heels offense is encouraging. It also helps that he's made coaching stops in different areas of the country, which should come in handy as he begins trying to sell the Mean Green to recruits from football hotbeds.
A resurgence isn't going to happen overnight, but North Texas apparently believes Littrell is the best option to lead the turnaround.
