Liverpool Transfer News: Jurgen Klopp Eyes Marco Reus Amid Real Madrid Rumours

James DudkoDec 3, 2015

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is "desperate" to reunite with former player Marco Reus, according to reports. The German coach will try to give Liverpool the edge over Real Madrid in any race to sign the Borussia Dortmund forward.

Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t Metro's Mark Brus) states both Klopp and Los Blancos are monitoring developments regarding Reus. Klopp and Reus helped Dortmund reach a UEFA Champions League and DFB-Pokal final.

That history and success could work in Klopp's favour if he opts to make a move, according to Brus: "The 26-year-old is known to be good friends with Klopp, who recognises the quality he could bring to his team."

There's no doubt landing Reus would be a major coup for Klopp's Anfield revolution. So far, the man who succeeded Brendan Rodgers has plotted some stunning results away from home. On Klopp's watch, the revitalised Reds have vanquished Chelsea, Manchester City and Southampton on their travels.

The performances have been spectacular. None more so than the recent 6-1 away trouncing of the Saints in the Capital One Cup.

Liverpool are playing football the Klopp way, pressing high up the pitch in numbers. When they win the ball, the Reds are attacking at pace, executing lightning-fast combination passing between a contingent of jet-heeled forwards.

In Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Daniel Sturridge, Klopp has ample pace and versatility to make his vision a success. But there's still room for a talent like Reus.

He is quick and crafty between the lines. Reus can create and score goals from either flank and even thrive when deployed through the middle.

The chances of actually bringing the dynamic attacker to Anfield may be stronger than many think.

Klopp recently refuted suggestions he's bound by a stipulation preventing him from raiding his old club for former players, according to Steve Millar of the Daily Star. In November, another Fichajes report (h/t Adam Skinner of the Daily Express) stated Reus is keen on working with Klopp again.

If Reus walks, it would likely be with his club's blessing. At least that's how Metro's Jamie Sanderson interpreted quotes from Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke given to German publication Die Welt: "There would be no conflict were there to be interest in one of our players at some point. He would contact us before (he contacts the player)."

Yet, even though the situation appears to favour Liverpool, it will still take some strong emotional ties to fend off interest from Madrid. The Spanish side have a greater chance of landing major silverware sooner than a Merseyside club undergoing yet another transformation.

But Klopp can justify launching a massive charm offensive to land a legitimate match-winning star. Signing Reus would earn Liverpool their first truly marquee talent since Luis Suarez left town.

As statements of intent go, this one would speak volumes about Liverpool's ability to finally get back among the major trophy winners on Klopp's watch.
