How 5-Star WR Kyle Davis' Commitment Impacts Auburn and Georgia

Sanjay KirpalaniNov 25, 2015

While Auburn has a lot at stake with this weekend's matchup against in-state rival Alabama, the Tigers landed a huge victory on the recruiting trail when 5-star wide receiver Kyle Davis announced his commitment to the Tigers on Wednesday.

The 6'1 ½", 218-pounder, who rates as the nation's No. 20 overall prospect and the top receiver in the 2016 cycle, picked the Tigers over Georgia and Tennessee.

In particular, the in-state Bulldogs were perceived as the heavy favorites to land the No. 2 prospect from the Peach State.

Instead, Davis—who is an early enrollee and will be on campus in January—represents a monster addition for Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn and his staff.

How does this commitment impact both the Tigers and the Bulldogs moving forward?

For starters, Auburn's 2016 class jumped up eight spots to the No. 10 slot in the 247Sports team rankings with the addition of Davis.

It's exactly the type of shot in the arm the Tigers—who have limped to a disappointing 6-5 season after being the preseason favorites to win the SEC title—need as they push to close out the 2016 cycle on a strong note.

Furthermore, in Davis, they get a playmaker with the ability to add a much-needed dimension to the Tigers passing attack.

During Malzahn's three years as the Tigers head coach, Auburn hasn't had a receiver top 45 catches in a season. Also, the club's leading receiver had seven touchdown receptions in 2013, five in 2014 and just three this season.

Davis is a weapon who is physically ready to contribute early in his college career. He's also the type of player who can turn short passes into long gains and become a valued target in the red zone.

As big of a pickup as he is for the Tigers, his decision to head elsewhere is a huge blow for the Bulldogs.

Wide receiver is a big point of emphasis for Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt and his staff in this cycle.

While Georgia has four receivers already committed in its 2016 class, Davis—who was in attendance for the Bulldogs win over Georgia Southern last weekend—was a priority recruit for UGA down the stretch.

Davis—along with 5-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown, 5-star tight end Isaac Nauta and 5-star athlete Mecole Hardman Jr.—is part of a collection of homegrown talent the Bulldogs were hoping to keep in-state.

Similar to the Tigers, the Bulldogs failed to meet lofty preseason expectations. Additionally, their 2016 class has always had the potential to end up as one of the nation's top classes.

However, with Davis heading to the Plains, it's the first major blow to their pursuit of an elite class. It also ramps up the pressure for Richt and his staff to close out the 2016 cycle on a strong note.
