Odds 4-Star QB Feleipe Franks Flips Commitment from LSU

Sanjay KirpalaniNov 23, 2015

After taking his second visit this month to see Florida over the weekend, the status of 4-star quarterback and current LSU commitment Feleipe Franks is up in the air.

Considered one of the crown jewels of the Tigers’ top-rated class, Franks—who is set to be an early enrollee—has visited both Florida State and Florida in recent weeks.

As Shea Dixon of Geaux247 details, the uncertain future of LSU head coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is one reason that may be giving Franks reason to take another look around before making a final decision.

With Franks set to make a third visit to Gainesville for this weekend’s showdown between the Gators and the Seminoles, it’s clear that his commitment to the Tigers is soft at best.

What are the odds that Franks flips to either Sunshine State power?

Let’s break down the recruitment of the nation’s No. 5 pro-style passer and the No. 45 player overall in the 2016 class.

Odds Franks Flips: 3-2

Franks has been committed to the Tigers since June 2014, but as he told 247Sports recently, he has one simple factor that could lead him to back off that pledge.

"After the Army game (I will enroll in a college). Like I said, I am still committed to LSU,” Franks told Dixon earlier this month. “But sometime in December (I will know a final decision). I wouldn’t really say it would take something significant (to change my mind). It’s not like I can say this or this has to happen. I just have to fall in love with the school. My heart would have to tell me to go there.”

Regardless of whether Miles returns, there’s a few reasons Franks is surveying his options before reaching a final conclusion.

The Tigers offense, particularly quarterback Brandon Harris, has struggled to find a consistent rhythm in the passing game. Despite the presence of stud sophomore running back Leonard Fournette, Harris has regressed after a solid start to the season.

By contrast, the other two programs he’s considering have head coaches with deep track records of developing quarterbacks.

Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher has mentored three first-round draft picks since taking over the Seminoles program. Meanwhile, Florida’s Jim McElwain has had plenty of success grooming passers dating back to his days as an offensive coordinator at Fresno State and Alabama.

Working in the Gators’ favor is a depth chart that lacks a young quarterback who is the clear-cut quarterback of the future in Gainesville.

Franks could opt to honor his initial commitment and be a part of a class that has the potential to turn things around in Baton Rouge.

However, his willingness to examine his options closely down the stretch seems to signal that he’s open to the possibility of flipping at the last minute.
