Philadelphia Eagles Week 11 Stock Report

Andrew KulpNov 18, 2015

Last week, the Philadelphia Eagles stock was soaring after a thrilling and pivotal overtime victory over the Dallas Cowboys. But following a stinker of a loss to the Miami Dolphins that dropped the Eagles to 4-5 and saw quarterback Sam Bradford get injured, that stock is once again plummeting.

There were some decent individual performances against Miami on Sunday, but by and large, the only takeaways were negative. This week's stock report will reflect that: One week after we focused on the ups, this time we are looking only at the downs.

As for Bradford, his stock would likely be up if he were still standing, as he was having another strong game before his porous offensive line let him down one too many times. As for backup Mark Sanchez, he did some things well, right up until tossing a crushing red-zone interception in the fourth quarter when a field goal would have given the Eagles the lead.

Sanchez's stock can hardly be down for that, though. After all, turnovers are sort of his calling card, no?

Stock Down: Miles Austin

1 of 5

It was hard for Miles Austin's stock to slip much lower, but it managed to after a brutal showing against the Dolphins. Austin was targeted four times and failed to record a single catch—yet it was the manner in which those passes fell incomplete that was the really frustrating part.

Twice, he didn't even appear to be looking for the ball; one of those instances resulted in an interception in the end zone. The 10th-year veteran also let a perfectly placed deep pass fall right through his arms and missed a would-be 26-yard touchdown because he couldn't get both feet in bounds.

According to Pro Football Focus, Austin has played more snaps than any Eagles receiver besides Jordan Matthews. Yet Austin has just 12 receptions on the entire season, and less than 50 percent of his targets have resulted in completions.

Austin is far from alone. None of Riley Cooper, Josh Huff or rookie Nelson Agholor has stepped up as a threat on the outside, either. That being said, Austin always seems to come up small whenever there's a play to be made.

Stock Down: Jason Kelce

2 of 5

This time last year, Jason Kelce was well on his way to his first Pro Bowl and was widely considered one of the best, young centers in the NFL. Fast-forward to 2015, and he has been more of a detriment than the keystone for Philadelphia's offensive line.

Nobody is taking the decline harder than Kelce, who told Reuben Frank for CSNPhilly.com that Sunday's performance against the Dolphins was the "worst game of my entire career."

“Three penalties. (Bleeping) bad snap. (Bleeping) just a terrible blocking performance. I got to get it corrected. But other than that, that's about all I have to say.”

Kelce is far from the only liability along the offensive line. Right guard Matt Tobin and right tackle Dennis Kelly—two reserves thrust into action because of injuries—had rough outings against Miami as well. However, expectations obviously are much higher for Kelce, and he has consistently failed to meet those throughout the season.

Stock Down: Kiko Alonso

3 of 5

To be fair, Kiko Alonso is still working his way back from injury. The third-year linebacker missed five games because of a sprained ACL—the same ACL he tore last season, a setback many feared would be season-ending.

Regardless, Alonso has been back for two weeks now and hasn't made much of an impact yet. He has just five tackles since returning, and perhaps most distressing of all he remains a limited part of the defense. According to Pro Football Focus, he has lined up for less than 50 percent of the snaps in each game.

Granted, the Eagles are no doubt being cautious with Alonso, whose play frankly hasn't merited a full-time role. Then again, this is the guy the Eagles traded All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy for, so the bar is set a little higher than it would be for most.

Ultimately, what's important is Alonso gets healthy and comfortable with the scheme. Maybe then he'll have the impact many imagined when the deal was made. At this moment, though, it's easy to feel a little underwhelmed.

Stock Down: Darren Sproles

4 of 5

Since his arrival last season, Darren Sproles has often been the spark on offense or special teams that lifted the Eagles whenever they needed it most. Unfortunately, that spark has been missing for a while.

In the Eagles' last four games, Sproles has had 13 carries for 36 yards—a meager 2.8 yards per attempt—and 13 passes for 73 yards—an equally unimpressive 5.6-yard average. The 11th-year back hasn't been dangerous in the return game, either. He had seven attempts go for 57 yards on Sunday and hasn't broken a long one since Week 4.

Some of Sproles' struggles can be blamed on the offensive line or the coaches' failure to get him open in space. Then again, we've seen him cut the wrong way or drop passes at times as well.

For whatever reason, Sproles simply hasn't been dynamic for the Eagles lately, and it's clear they are missing his big plays and production.

Stock Down: Jon Dorenbos

5 of 5

It's so easy to forget about the long snapper, unless he plays a direct role in a loss. Even then, it's easy to overlook how costly Jon Dorenbos' snap issues proved for the Eagles on Sunday.

In fact, special teams were arguably the biggest factor in the loss to the Dolphins, and Dorenbos had a hand in each of the major miscues. The holder was unable to handle a low snap on Caleb Sturgis' missed 32-yard field goal, likely causing the knuckle ball off the kicker's foot. Later, a poor snap contributed to Donnie Jones having his punt blocked and returned to the Philadelphia 8-yard line, from where Miami easily scored.

Obviously, Sturgis' field goal could have been the difference in a one-point game, and it's likely never even close if Jones' punt isn't blocked. Instead, those two plays swung the outcome in the Dolphins' favor, and the Eagles are sitting back below .500 as a result.
