Notable Matchups

No. 10 Baylor at No. 4 Oklahoma State

It's a safe bet that the Big 12's last hope for a spot in the College Football Playoff rests with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. All they need is two more wins, and the road to get them could not be paved any better for them.

The Cowboys welcome the Baylor Bears and freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham to Stillwater for a game that could either keep Baylor's season going, or end it on Saturday night.

Saturday was the first time Baylor found itself facing a very good team, losing 44-34 to the Oklahoma Sooners at home. Stidham threw two interceptions on the day and the Bears lost their first game of the year. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State had to storm back from a 17-point deficit to beat the Iowa State Cyclones to win 35-31 and stay undefeated.

Although their wins haven't been pretty by any stretch, the Cowboys have one thing that no other team in the Big 12 conversation has: a signature win over a top team. Beating the TCU Horned Frogs with Trevone Boykin in convincing fashion is Oklahoma State's calling card when the CFP Selection Committee is choosing its final four teams.

Baylor can get that quality win if it beats the Cowboys, but it's tough to see that happening with the way Mason Rudolph has been throwing the ball the last few weeks. Since throwing three interceptions against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Oct. 10, Rudolph has thrown nine touchdowns to only one pick.

It's too tough a task to ask Stidham to go into Stillwater, with the Cowboys playing for more than a Big 12 title, and get a huge win on the road. Oklahoma State wins and sets up a winner-take-all showdown with Oklahoma.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 42, Baylor 31

No. 11 TCU at No. 7 Oklahoma

Trevone Boykin is slated to start for the TCU Horned Frogs, according to head coach Gary Patterson per ESPN.com, when they head to Norman, Oklahoma for the second Big 12 showdown of the afternoon against the Oklahoma Sooners.

Here's the thing: It might not even matter if Boykin is able to play or not. TCU is on a two-week tailspin that may be too much to overcome when taking on a red-hot Sooners team.

Boykin sprained his right ankle in the first quarter of TCU's 23-17 win over the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. He was replaced by Bram Kohlhausen, who did just enough to get the Horned Frogs a much-needed win against the lowly Jayhawks.

But that's the issue: Even with a backup quarterback, TCU should not have won by only six points to Kansas. There's fear that the hangover from the loss to Oklahoma State still lingers for TCU. Tack that on with Boykin's bum ankle, and that's a disastrous combination for the Frogs.

Even though Oklahoma got to skate by a Baylor team led by a freshman quarterback, the Sooners' run since losing to the Texas Longhorns on Oct. 10 has been spectacular. Oklahoma has outscored its last five opponents 276-84, and Baker Mayfield is playing his way into the Heisman conversation with 31 touchdowns and only five interceptions this year.

TCU is a huge mystery right now. Oklahoma is not. Based on that alone, the Sooners should win this one by a couple of scores.

Prediction: Oklahoma 45, TCU 28

No. 9 Michigan State vs. No. 2 Ohio State

While the Big 12 is still sorting itself out, there's still the matter of who will be in the Big Ten title game. More importantly, who's going to win the Big Ten East?

That race can be decided this week if the Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Michigan State Spartans, along with a Penn State Nittany Lions win over the Michigan Wolverines. Either way, this is more than likely coming down to the final week. And this may also be the last tough test for the defending national champions this regular season.

Ohio State has not looked like a juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination. The Buckeyes keep winning, though. Their last five wins have come by double digits, with the slimmest margin coming at 14 points. Ezekiel Elliott has carried the Buckeyes to those wins, averaging 139.2 yards per game and scoring eight touchdowns.

Ralph Russo of the Associated Press has Elliott back in Heisman consideration, based on the quarterback conundrum the Buckeyes have dealt with this year:

Until a team finds out a formula to stop Elliott, Ohio State will not lose. Michigan State may be able to do enough to keep the game close thanks to quarterback Connor Cook, but Ohio State will win and set up the biggest Buckeyes-Wolverines matchup in recent memory.

Prediction: Ohio State 27, Michigan State 20
