The Las Vegas Marathon is as unique as the desert city itself. Held at night, the iconic Strip closes down for the race as the runners crowd the road beneath Sin City's flashy neon signs.
As this tweet from Vegas.com showed, it's a one-of-a-kind sight:
The Las Vegas Marathon has a long history, stretching back to 1967. While it has never achieved elite-race status, its location and atmosphere have made it a remarkable event. Perhaps the Elvis impersonators have run other marathons, but in Las Vegas, they are just a regular part of the festivities.

In 2009, the Las Vegas Marathon became part of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series. It was a natural fit. The Rock 'n' Roll series organizes races that feature musical entertainment at various spots throughout the course.
According to the series' website, more runners participate in its events than in any other running series in the United States. It's also an international series. In addition to Las Vegas, other notable cities that participate include Montreal, New Orleans and Mexico City.
This year's race in Vegas featured a concert by Kid Rock, as this tweet from MZappa777 highlighted:
The image of the hard-partying and emaciated rock star puffing away on a cigar is not one you would expect to find closely associated with a marathon. But Las Vegas is not like any other city. And the Las Vegas Marathon is not like any other race.
