Grand Slam of Darts 2015: Saturday Scores, Results and Latest Schedule

James DudkoNov 14, 2015

Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith reached the last four of the Singha Beer 2015 Grand Slam of Darts. MVG beat Kim Huybrechts in outrageously impressive fashion after Smith upset Adrian Lewis to begin the evening's session.

Those results have set up an intriguing semi-final between young upstart Smith and the sport's current dominant star, Van Gerwen.

Here are the scores from Saturday's quarter-final matches:

Recap

As the headline attraction, Van Gerwen stepped up the oche and began dismantling Huybrechts. A 135 checkout got MVG going, and he then took down 112 to go two legs in front.

The pace was frenetic, with the third leg taking just 11 darts. But Huybrechts produced a special finish of his own, hitting double-12 to complete a 141 checkout.

That only seemed to anger Van Gerwen, who soon went 4-1 up. His scoring average at the first interval was incredible, as PDC Darts' Twitter account detailed:

But Huybrechts wasn't done. He made it 4-2 before the players traded maximums. MVG missed double-16 but got a reprieve when Huybrechts couldn't hit double-14. The Belgian couldn't take down bull, leaving Van Gerwen needing a double-18 to go 6-2 ahead.

Up 8-2 at the second interval, Van Gerwen looked in no mood to slow down. Double-eight put him 10-2 ahead, and Huybrechts was bewildered.

Another double, this one on 18, put the Green Machine 12-2 in front. Then another 12-dart leg, ending with treble-17 and double-eight, made it 13-2.

Peerless with the Tungsten, MVG took the match, with the only surprise being he hadn't hit a nine-darter. His scoring average was unbelievable, as noted by Live Darts on Twitter:

Smith stunned Lewis by racing into a 7-2 lead in the opening quarter-final clash. A decisive moment came in the fourth leg, with Smith 2-1 ahead. Both players missed double-10 to take the leg, but eventually, Smith made double-two to claim it. Bully Boy then stretched his lead his further, twice breaking throw to go five legs in front.

Then it was Lewis' turn to break his opponent. A 121 checkout got him back in it. Soon, Lewis had pulled to 7-5, and Smith was rattled. But a huge missed opportunity handed the initiative back to Smith:

Two legs later, Lewis was three behind at the third interval. An impressive scoring rate was the key to his ability to continue battling back:

A double-18 helped him break throw to make it 9-7. It was a rare successful double from Lewis who had given Smith too many chances to pad his lead.

But what Lewis was able to do was hit his share of maximums. A pair of 180s and tops put the score at 9-8.

A fantastic shot at Bull put Bully Boy back in front by two, but Lewis' response was yet another 180.

Missing tops at 10-8 looked like it would cost Lewis, but Smith couldn't take down double-18. Getting another chance, Smith hit double-14 to go three legs ahead. Double-10 put him four up at the next break.

The scoring from both players had been spectacular during that session:

Playing to a finish, Lewis fell five behind and began to look like a beaten man. But a poor leg from Smith almost kept Jackpot in it. Smith needed double-18 and double-10 to finish things.

Lewis was still missing too often whenever he visited doubles. His body language was increasingly despondent even after drawing closer at 14-9.

A wayward dart at double-13 gave Smith another of his favourites, double-10, to move one leg short of the semi-final. His ninth 180 of the match was the perfect start to the final leg. Yet, another double-10, this one from Lewis, made it 15-11. Smith looked awed by the pressure—he certainly threw like it.

But Lewis missed the same mark to really turn up the heat, and then Smith couldn't hit tops. Fortunately, he got one more double-10 to take the match and book his place in the final four.

Afterwards, Smith discussed how close Lewis had made things. He also promised to make amends for disappointment last year:

Smith will have to do better holding his nerve against Van Gerwen. MVG certainly won't be as generous missing doubles as Lewis was in Wolverhampton.

Van Gerwen still looks like the man to beat. Judging by the way he's playing, just don't count on any of the remaining field managing it.
