College Football Playoff 2015: Latest Rankings and Reaction Entering Week 11

Steven CookNov 11, 2015

There will never be a unanimous feeling of agreement when the College Football Playoff rankings come out, but it's safe to say the second installment of the Top 25 has been met with considerably less disdain than the first.

Many folks weren't happy with a certain SEC team's inclusion in the initial Top Four, but that certain SEC team went out and dominated the previous No. 2 team in the CFP committee's rankings. Of course, that's only the start of what the committee offered in their rankings entering Week 11, which you can see below.

There was no doubt where the committee would start their rankings at in Week 11—not after another impressive win by the top-ranked squad.

The Clemson Tigers cleared what seemed to be their final major hurdle on Saturday, defeating the Florida State Seminoles at home in a 23-13 triumph. With only Purdue, Wake Forest and South Carolina left before the ACC title game, Clemson is sitting pretty for a CFP berth.

Alabama joins them in that regard after disposing of the LSU Tigers in impressive fashion at home Saturday. Just like last year, the Crimson Tide are overcoming an early-season defeat to Ole Miss and appear set to represent the SEC in the CFP for the second straight year.

Their constant success has been noteworthy, as ESPN Stats & Info noted:

Also noteworthy is the fact that the Tide catapulted one of the other Top Four squads with their win, jumping above Ohio State for the No. 2 spot. The Buckeyes will have their chances to prove their abilities in a tough late-season stretch, anyway.

With that said, many aren't sold on the Buckeyes' worthiness of being there, including Mike Greenberg of ESPN's Mike & Mike Show:

As tends to be the case, the committee has seemingly used certain criteria in their justification process that hasn't been implemented across the board. One of those is discounting teams like Iowa and Baylor for a lack of strong wins, while overlooking the fact that Ohio State hasn't had many, either.

Matt Hayes of Sporting News echoed that sentiment:

Of course, the big thing to remember for fans, media and teams alike is this one thing—there's still a lot of football left to be played.

When it comes down to it, these CFP committee rankings only mean something when the season is fully finished. Right now, they mean absolutely nothing and are nothing but talking points for folks like us, as Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman echoed:

While this won't stop fans of teams like Baylor and others from getting worked up, there's still a lot of football to be played. Many of the teams near the top of the rankings have big-time contests left on their schedules—contests that will give a much better feel as to who the top four teams truly are.

Until then, we might as well overreact as college football fans do.
