WWE Star Sheamus Backs Jurgen Klopp to Bring Glory Days Back to Liverpool

Rob BlanchetteNov 10, 2015

WWE Superstar Sheamus has stated he believes Jurgen Klopp is the man to take Liverpool back to their glory days, with the ardent Reds supporter proclaiming the German as a "great manager."

The Irish wrestler told the Liverpool Echo the club have craved leadership and vision, but it will take Klopp time to revitalise the fortunes of the Anfield giants:

"

I think he is a great manager for Liverpool and the team are playing with passion. I think he’s a perfect fit for Liverpool, I mean that’s what we need, a good manager with a good vision, good direction and somebody that can inspire all our players, I think we finally have that.

It’s going to be hard because he’s joined them quarter way through the season, it’s going to take time to see who his best players are, and I feel like there’s a lot of parts of the team that need to be strengthened. I know he’s already looking towards the future, so as long as we stay in there with a chance for Europe (Europa Cup) I’ll be very happy!

The former WWE champion has been a fan of Liverpool since childhood due to the strong Irish presence among the Reds squad at the time.

The Celtic Warrior explained to the Echo's Neil Docking in 2014 the reason's for shying away from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal and his father's team, Leeds United:

"

There was about three different contingents in my school, a couple of groups liked Arsenal and Manchester United, and Liverpool, and because of the Irish contingent of Aldridge, Staunton, Whelan and Houghton and all – Mark Lawrenson was there as well in the past – I just picked Liverpool.

My dad was dismayed because he was a Leeds United fan, he was trying to get me into football for years, he was always trying to put me on the Leeds side, but I became a Red.

The Dublin-born brawler has commented about Liverpool in the past, claiming Martin Skrtel and Raheem Sterling would have made great wrestlers if they had chosen careers in the squared circle, per Docking.

Liverpool have failed to win the Premier League since its inception, last claiming the English top division championship in 1990, according to the club's official website, when Sheamus was a child.

Klopp arrived at Anfield with a huge reputation for squad building after turning Borussia Dortmund into double winners of the Bundesliga during his seven years at the helm at the Westfalenstadion.

Liverpool opted to replace former boss Brendan Rodgers with the enigmatic German, and Sheamus has given his blessing to the change in direction.

However, Klopp has struggled during his opening weeks in the high-profile job; a win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was followed by a shock defeat at Anfield to Crystal Palace, as fans poured out of the stadium before full-time, surprising the new manager.

Phil Thompson of Sky Sports said Klopp shouldn't be worried by the occurrence, insisting: "Fans leaving was not the reason Liverpool lost that game. You just have to look at Klopp at the end, he was drenched - it was a downpour. All those areas around Jurgen are where people will get wet too. This is a way of life at a Premier League ground. People leave early."

The Reds will be in contention for the top four this term as Chelsea struggle to drive their way up the table, but as Sheamus intimates, it will take Klopp time to get the squad into shape in order to win silverware.

The problems at Liverpool have been endemic and years in the making. Klopp needs to carry out a root-and-branch examination of the Fenway Sports Group-owned club in order for them to thrive once more.
