NASCAR at Texas 2015 Results: Winner, Standings, Highlights and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldNov 8, 2015

NASCAR's Chase for the 2015 Sprint Cup continued Sunday in the second of three Eliminator Round races at the AAA Texas 500.

Jimmie Johnson claimed glory at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth for the fourth year in a row and sixth time overall, racing to Victory Lane and denying pole-sitter Brad Keselowski from clinching an automatic berth for the Championship Round.

Only four men will have a chance to claim NASCAR's top prize, with Jeff Gordon the only one in at this stage. Here is a look at the results from Sunday's race:

1Jimmie Johnson
2Brad Keselowski1.083
3Kevin Harvick3.603
4Kyle Busch5.234
5Carl Edwards6.201
6Dale Earnhardt Jr.6.605
7Kurt Busch8.052
8Martin Truex Jr.9.370
9Jeff Gordon9.685
10Jamie McMurray11.156

Fox Sports: NASCAR provided a snapshot of how the current Chase picture looks:

Keselowski seized the pole and refused to waver for much of the afternoon, racking up 312 laps led and fending off a furious charge by Martin Truex Jr. following a restart with just 18 laps to go.

Johnson had won the previous three runs of the AAA Texas 500 and found himself in contention for a consolatory win despite being bounced from the Chase in the first phase. He ultimately overcame an epic performance by the No. 2 Team Penske car on a pass that had only four laps to spare.

The following reaction from NASCAR's official Twitter account did well to summarize the circumstances surrounding Sunday's top two:

Matt Kenseth wasn't in action Sunday but weighed in on Johnson's late surge to take the checkered flag:

NASCAR's brightest young star in 25-year-old Joey Logano swept the postseason's Contender Round and appeared to be a mortal lock for the exclusive four who'd be in it to win it entering the grand finale. Unfortunately, Kenseth wrecked Logano at Martinsville Speedway last week, resulting in a two-race suspension for the 43-year-old.

Then more troubles came about for Logano on Sunday when he blew his left-rear tire 10 laps in, suddenly putting his championship hopes in jeopardy.

Only a win in the next race will qualify Logano for the Championship Round—much to the delight of fans apparently, per ESPN's Bob Pockrass:

Keselowski was also involved in the Logano wreck at Martinsville yet managed to bounce back, put together an excellent qualifying run and carry it over—only to be denied at the bitter end by the all-time great Johnson.

Texas Motor Speedway had a fitting welcome ready for Johnson following his latest exploits at the venue:

It has to help Keselowski going forward that he's won the NASCAR Sprint Cup crown in 2012, which mitigates some of the pressure others who haven't won before face. On the other hand, he may find it difficult to bounce back from such a close call.

Jeff Gluck of USA Today doesn't fancy Keselowski's chances of getting to the final Chase phase:

Next up is the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Just as was the case entering this week's race, one driver is a three-time defending champion, Kevin Harvick.

Phoenix hosts the CampingWorld.com 500, which Harvick has won each of the past two seasons as well. He also won the Chase last year and posted a strong finish Sunday, so he'll hope to carry over strong form to a track he's had immense success at in recent years.

Between Sunday's masterful showcase by Keselowski that fell short, how realistic of a shot Harvick seems to have at defending the Chase title, Jeff Gordon's swan song and Logano's last-ditch effort to advance, there is no shortage of storylines to feast on. The stage is being set for a magnificent Chase conclusion at Homestead-Miami Speedway in two weeks.
