Gennady Golovkin 'Would Make All Efforts' to Face Floyd Mayweather, Says Trainer

Stuart NewmanNov 2, 2015

Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez has told On The Ropes Boxing Radio the Kazakh starlet will do all in his power to move down a weight and fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the American decides to come out of retirement.

Boxing is at something of a crossroads right now, with Mayweather retired and Manny Pacquiao set to hang up the gloves in April, and Golovkin looks to be the golden boy of the next generation.

Yet the middleweight fighter still wants to beat the best to be the best, and Sanchez said his client would come down to 154lbs and into the light middleweight ranks to have a pop at the champ:

"

Golovkin has stated many times in the past that the Floyd Mayweather fight would be his dream fight and he’s the only one that he would come down to 154lbs for, the only one that he would come down for by choice, not by being forced. If Floyd decides to come back and decides that’s who he wants, Gennady would make all efforts to try to accommodate him.

"

Whether Mayweather returns to boxing is very much up for debate; yet if history serves, then it’s certainly a possibility.

Money “retired” back in 2008, only to a make a triumphant return less than two years later and enjoy further glory in the ring.

And although Mayweather slowed down during the back "end" of his career, he still proved able to take on all comers as soon as September, with a convincing display against Andre Berto.

Plus, as reported by Sky Sports, he recently teased fans by saying: “I’m not coming back, but… I’m just happy to be on the other side.”

One man who definitely thinks Mayweather will be back in the ring is Sanchez, although he told On The Ropes that returning for an easy bout will tarnish his name—he needs to take on the best yet again:

"

I think that Floyd is teasing us and I think he will definitely come back, but it’s gonna be on his terms, as it always has been. I just hope that when he does come back that he views the public with enough respect that he takes a fight that is gonna be something that is gonna be accepted by the fans, but if he takes another Berto then I think he’s doing himself a disservice and for his legacy, we’re gonna look at him a little bit different.

He’s a great fighter with a great name and if he comes back I think he needs to fight somebody who’s gonna give us that warm fuzzy feeling that at least he went out on a high note.

"

Taking on Golovkin would be the perfect high note to go out on, as the Kazakh’s aggressive style would give Mayweather plenty to think about.

Sugar Ray Leonard recently told World Boxing News that Golovkin is a top fighter, with the credentials to do damage to all before him: "Gennady Golovkin is one of those fighters that goes into the ring with one thing only on his mind—a knockout. Golovkin has that one track mind where he just wants to do damage. He’s done well so far and is rightly considered a top fighter."

Now, it’s over to Floyd.

Should the American never set foot in a ring again, he’d still go out as one of the best to ever lace up a set of gloves.

He runs the risk of ruining his perfect fight record with a comeback bout—particularly against Golovkin—yet knowing Money, he’ll still be determined to prove that he’s the daddy of the sport.
