Briles Wishes Russell Well in Surgery
Friday, Oct. 30
"Much hope for a successful procedure for Seth Russell," head coach Art Briles said on Twitter. "Baylor love and faith with him this morning."
On Oct. 26, Baylor confirmed Russell's season is over after visiting a specialist, saying the quarterback faces a six-month recovery. Joe Schad of ESPN.com reported Baylor is "hopeful" Russell will be able to resume his career.
Russell's Absence Is Major Blow to Baylor's Playoff Hopes
Taking over as the full-time starter at Baylor in his junior season, Russell has been a touchdown-producing machine, throwing for 29 touchdowns in his first seven games of the season.
He's led a potent Baylor offense that hasn't scored fewer than 45 points in a game in 2015 on its way to a No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Baylor's man under center wasn't just getting it done through the air. A bruising runner for a quarterback, Russell has rushed for an additional 402 yards this year. The team highlighted his stats:
With Russell out, the only other Baylor quarterback to attempt a pass this season is freshman Jarrett Stidham, who has been given reps in garbage time of some of the Bears' biggest blowouts of the season.
He's been plenty accurate, completing 23 of 27 passes, but he'll now have to lead a high-powered offense full-time as the Bears enter the meat of the Big 12 schedule. If they want to keep their playoff hopes alive, Stidham will have to keep playing at an efficient level and keep the Bears rolling.
