Rugby World Cup Results 2015: Tonga vs. Namibia Score, Updated Fixture Schedule

Tom SunderlandSep 29, 2015

A five-try blitz saw Tonga claim their first Rugby World Cup 2015 victory on Tuesday after they defeated African underdogs Namibia with a convincing 35-21 display.

Jack Ram and Telusa Veainu notched two tries apiece to dazzle as Tonga talismans, but head coach Mana Otai's side are still waiting for a player to score their first-ever World Cup hat-trick.

Pool C minnows Namibia put up a particularly tough fight in the second period, but the victors enjoyed an obvious advantage in the technical aspect and never really had to get out of second gear.

It didn't take long for the Sea Eagles to get their account up and running at Sandy Park, home of the Exeter Chiefs, after Veainu ghosted through Namibian lines to tumble over with just five minutes on the clock.

Ram went over for his first try of the day just six minutes later, but a 17th-minute score from Johan Tromp pulled a sense of competition back into the fray. ITV Rugby provided a look at Namibia's second try of the competition:

The scoreline looked significantly tighter at 11-7, but Tonga fly-half Latiume Fosita was on hand to reopen a bit of daylight between the two teams as his 24th-minute try proved to be the last of the opening period.

Ram had been heavily involved in the creation of several Tonga tries, but he was happy to take more of the spotlight on his own, bagging a second try just four minutes after the action had resumed:

It was near the start of the second half that Otai's men started to step things up a gear, though, and Namibia struggled to cope with phase after phase of the relentless battering brought forth by their foes.

Pool C looks much closer as long as Tonga can maintain some of the back-line fluidity they enjoyed against Namibia, and the Daily Telegraph's Brendan Gallagher noted they may even be able to challenge Argentina:

Namibia wouldn't wilt away without a battle, though, and captain Jacques Burger battered his way over for two tries on either side of Veainu's second to once again give his side a glimmer of hope.

The two teams entered the final 10 minutes with the scores perched at 35-21, but ESPN.com's Tristan Barclay doubted Namibia's chance of a losing bonus point thanks largely to an inferior bench:

Even Burger's courageous leadership wasn't sufficient to get Namibia's points tally off the ground, and his side now have a week to prepare for their showdown with Georgia on October 1.

Tonga's hopes of a quarter-final place have been reignited thanks to Tuesday's bonus-point win, but those aspirations could be all too easily brought down once again with a fixture against Argentina this Sunday.
