Report: Giants Working Out Welker on Tuesday

Tuesday, Sept. 29

Despite the New York Giants' considerable depth at wide receiver, they showed a willingness Tuesday to see if Welker has anything left in the tank.

According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, the G-Men worked out Welker as well as former Big Blue wideout Hakeem Nicks.

The 34-year-old Welker was one of the NFL's best pass-catchers with the New England Patriots from 2007-2012, as he averaged 112 catches per season and was twice named an All-Pro.

He joined the Denver Broncos in 2013 and put up solid totals of 73 receptions for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns, but he fell off significantly in 2014 to the tune of 49 grabs for 464 yards and two scores, which were his worst numbers since 2006.

Denver opted against bringing him back despite lacking a great option in the slot and despite his accolades and experience, Welker has been watching from the sidelines to open the season:

Part of that may be because Welker suffered three concussions in 10 months leading up to the start of the 2014 season.

"Welker's concussion history has caused teams to shy away from him, and Nicks spent a promising summer in training camp with the Titans before being cut in their final roster reduction," noted ESPN's Dan Graziano.

Even though the Giants are working Welker out Tuesday, they aren't necessarily likely to sign him since Victor Cruz is confident that he will be able to return to action in Week 4 after missing the first three games due to a strained calf muscle, per Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

Having Cruz in the slot to go along with Odell Beckham Jr. and Rueben Randle wouldn't leave the Giants with much need for a player like Welker.

With that said, the workout represents an opportunity for the former Texas Tech standout. If he proves he still has something left, he may get a chance to catch on elsewhere.
