Ireland 44-10 Romania

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt was happy to once again see his back-line assets operating at their optimum against Romania on Sunday as the Boys in Green bounced to a 44-10 win at Wembley.

The rugby masses flocked to London to see the Six Nations title holders in action, and World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper confirmed the Pool D collision as a World Cup record-breaker:

Just as they did against Canada a week prior, Ireland proceeded to unleash the very best their backs had to offer as Keith Earls and Tommy Bowe ran in two tries apiece against a poor Romania lineup.

Joining that duo on the try-scorer sheet came Chris Henry and substitute Rob Kearney, the latter of whom scored arguably the most pleasing try of the match as far as Schmidt will be concerned, per ITV Rugby:

Getting their backs out of second gear has been something of a concern for Ireland of late, but the form shown so far at this year's World Cup would suggest such worries may be a thing of the past.

Ruaidhri O'Connor of the Irish Independent agreed that Ireland looked particularly slick against the Oaks on Sunday, although an inevitable rise in competition is sure to provide stiffer tests moving forward:

There was a sour note for Ireland, though, as star full-back Kearney was forced to come off not long after making his introduction, seemingly suffering with an injury to his thigh.

With 10 points from an available 10, Ireland are in cruise control so far at the World Cup, but they will look to start quicker as they edge ever closer to a climactic pool decider against France on October 11.

Scotland 39-16 United States

Scotland overcame a disappointing start on Sunday to defeat the United States 39-16 after running in five second-half tries without response.

The victory ensures Scotland maintain their 100 percent start to the World World Cup thus far, picking up all 10 points on offer, with OptaJonny indicating the team is beginning to hit top form at just the right time:

Cotter's side went in at the half-time whistle trailing 13-6 after the USA's Titi Lamositele bulldozed his way to the only try of the opening 40 minutes, but preserving that lead proved troublesome for the Americans.

Tim Visser got over a criminal handling error in the first period to score just one minute into the second half, with Sean Maitland and Willem Nel adding the second and third tries before Matt Scott clinched the bonus point, per ITV Rugby:

The Scots' bench had a heavy hand in the result as the United States just couldn't match their opponents' strength in depth, and Scotland can once again dream of topping Pool B.

While the attacking performance was hugely promising, Cotter may indeed be most pleased with how stingy his side became in the second period, as pointed out by ESPN's Tristan Barclay:

The next test is likely to be Scotland's biggest as they prepare to meet South Africa on October 3, with the Springboks having regained some momentum with a 46-6 win over Samoa on Saturday.

There's a good chance Scotland can lose that showdown and still bank on making it to the quarter-finals, but Cotter's side could well have loftier expectations now as they hope to take Pool B's perch as their own.

Australia 65-3 Uruguay

Australia were rampant as they ran home 11 tries against hapless Uruguay.

The Wallabies needed just seven minutes to score their first, as Sean McMahon went over after sneaking round the back of a driving maul at the corner. Two minutes after that, they had a second, as Joseph Tomane went over unopposed after a neat offload from Quade Cooper.

Uruguay responded well and held Australia back for a while, even putting points on the board thanks to a Felipe Berchesi penalty, but before long, the rout resumed and Dean Mumm eased his way through their line, per ITV Rugby:

Two more tries from Henry Speight and Ben McCalman gave the Wallabies an incredible 31-3 lead at half-time, as Uruguay's defence lapsed time and again in front of Australia's attacking prowess.

Drew Mitchell got in on the action after the restart with a brace in the space of four minutes; the first was particularly impressive, per ITV Rugby:

McCalman had his brace shortly after the hour mark after some good work from Kurtley Beale, before McMahon grabbed his second from another maul. Beale laid on Matt Toomua for a try of his own, and Tevita Kuridrani rounded out the scoring for the Wallabies in the last act of the match.

Australia's confidence will be sky-high when they take on England in their crunch match, but Cooper will be unlikely to feature after his kicking display on Sunday.

The fly-half's kicking was the only negative in an otherwise incredible result for the Wallabies, as he made just five conversions from the 11 tries.

Uruguay are looking increasingly likely to finish at the bottom of Pool A as expected, and they will need to try to earn back some respectability after being comprehensively dismantled.
