Michigan Football: Most Impressive Wolverines Heading into BYU Game

David KenyonSep 25, 2015

The Michigan Wolverines are heading into a showdown against the No. 23 BYU Cougars, and a handful of players will look to continue their impressive starts to the 2015 season.

Running back De'Veon Smith and tight end Jake Butt each had terrific single-game performances, but the Wolverines who made the list have consistently impacted the team.

Although Michigan has jumped out to a respectable 2-1 record, Jim Harbaugh's squad needs a certain receiver, two linemen, a linebacker and defensive back to sustain—and even elevatetheir respective contributions.

Amara Darboh, Wide Receiver

1 of 5

The Wolverines desperately needed Amara Darboh to step up and lead the receiving corps. Well, he has.

Darboh reeled in eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown during the season opener. Since then, the senior receiver has tallied eight catches for 84 yards while Michigan relied on the ground game against inferior opponents.

He also provided the final downfield block that sealed Jehu Chesson's 36-yard score on a jet sweep against UNLV.

Michigan's competition is steadily improving, and Darboh will be expected to establish himself as a regular part of the offense. He's shown that's a reasonable outlook in limited opportunities so far.

Graham Glasgow, Center

2 of 5

Offensive linemen typically don't get the credit they deserve. While Kyle Kalis and Ben Braden have noticeably improved in 2015, Graham Glasgow is still the leader of the line.

A two-year starter, Glasgow split time at right and left guard last season but moved to center when Jack Miller announced his retirement. Glasgow has started each game there and isn't losing that spot anytime soon.

MLive's Nick Baumgardner notes Harbaugh said Glasgow "has been consistently very good."

Last week, the 6'6", 303-pound senior made the critical block that sprung Ty Isaac's 76-yard touchdown scamper. Yes, the center pulled all the way to the outside and created the pivotal running lane.

The Wolverines rely on their running game, but they lean on Glasgow.

Jourdan Lewis, Cornerback

3 of 5

Jourdan Lewis exited the Oregon State game early due to a concussion, but that was merely a minor setback in a strong opening to the year.

Through two-and-a-half quarters of action, Lewis has recorded nine tackles and broken up a remarkable six passeswhich is tied for seventh-most in the nation. He's accomplished that while defending the opposition's No. 1 target.

Lewis' only blemish came against Oregon State on a perfectly placed touchdown in the back corner of the end zone. Although the junior certainly doesn't like ceding a score, that's not a bad résumé.

The secondary will face its first major test when BYU and its collection of tall receivers enter Michigan Stadium, and Lewis will be a major influence of how the Wolverines ultimately grade out.

Desmond Morgan, Linebacker

4 of 5

Following a 2014 campaign overshadowed by a season-ending injury, Desmond Morgan has admirably filled Jake Ryan's sizable void.

The senior linebacker registered eight solo tackles in his return and has logged 19 total tackles—1.5 for lossthis season. Additionally, he's managed a sack, set up a half-sack for Mario Ojemudia, broken up a pass, tallied a quarterback hit and forced a fumble.

As a unit, the Wolverines linebackers have missed too many tackles, and Morgan certainly has whiffed on his fair share. However, he's occupied the glaring hole and led the middle of the defense.

Chris Wormley, Defensive End

5 of 5

Without a doubt, Chris Wormley has emerged as the surprise of the year.

Perhaps Harbaugh utilized a motivational tactic and didn't start the senior defensive end against Utah, but no matter the case, Wormley has stepped up in a major way.

He's racked up seven tackles for loss, including a pair of three-TFL performances in the season opener as a "reserve" and the following week opposite Oregon State—one of which was a sack. Wormley has also forced a fumble.

Michigan's defensive line has opened the 2015 campaign as the team's strength, and Wormley's been the most impressive player in the unit.
