Brandon Robinson to North Carolina: Tar Heels Land 4-Star Guard Prospect

Scott PolacekSep 28, 2015

North Carolina added a perimeter shooting and scoring guard who could be ready to contribute right away with the commitment of Brandon Robinson on Monday.

“I’ve decided to go to North Carolina,” Robinson said, per Evan Daniels of Scout.com. “I’ve just prayed about it and thought about it for a long time. I compared it to all the others schools that were recruiting me based on the style of play and just the need for me there and the want for me there.”

The 6’5”, 160-pound Robinson is a 4-star recruit, per 247Sports’ composite rankings. He is the No. 55 prospect in the 2016 class, the No. 10 shooting guard and the No. 3 player from Georgia.

The Georgia native drew plenty of interest from local teams Georgia and Georgia Tech, but the Tar Heels, Florida State and Louisville also recruited him throughout his decision process. It is a testament to his overall talent that so many marquee programs looked his way during the recruiting cycle.

Robinson’s high school coach, Hollis Bethea, discussed his player’s preferences, per Jeff Greer of the Courier-Journal in Louisville:

"

The style of play is big to him, if that style of play of that program fits him. The coaching staff -- what kind of (head) coach is he? Is it somebody who can help Brandon grow? He does want to try and be an NBA player. He wants to go to a school that gives him the best opportunity for that, and most importantly, a really good education.

"

North Carolina brought enough to the table for the shooting guard, with Robinson explaining his decision to Daniels:

"

I don’t think the official did it for me. I think the in-home visit did it for me. Coach showed me his plan and what he thought he could do for me. The biggest thing they told me and caught my attention was Coach said he don’t see how good I am right now, (he said) that I have a lot of potential and he could see me grow and he wanted to help me with that.

Then Coach [Hubert] Davis, he’s a guy that played at that school and played at my position in the NBA for a long time, so that’s a big thing to me. He can teach me how to get there and stay there.

"

Robinson played with the Georgia Stars during the summer and captured a Nike Peach Jam championship in July. His ability to drill three-point shots when defenders collapsed on his teammates was critical, and his size helped him shoot over smaller players, attack the paint and contribute in the rebounding game.

All of those traits will help Robinson challenge for playing time right away, even at a traditionally strong program like North Carolina. He is versatile enough to play point guard, but he will likely thrive off of the ball, where he also can guard opposing wing players.

As long as he finds the basket with his smooth jumper, Robinson will see the floor at the collegiate level.
