Daily Fantasy Golf 2015: PGA TOUR Championship Primer for DraftKings

Steve SilvermanSep 22, 2015

Is there any doubt that Jason Day is the PGA Tour's Player of the Year?

Day just picked up a victory in the BMW Championship at Conway Farms in Lake Forest Illinois, and if that sounds like a rerun, it's only because it is. Day has won four of the last six tournaments he has entered and is now the top-ranked player in the world.

But as far as the FedEx Cup playoffs are concerned, there's one more tournament to play before a champion is crowned. The TOUR Championship in Atlanta will determine the winner of the playoffs.

DraftKings gives golf fans a chance to pick out their top fantasy team by picking out the six golfers they want on their team while having a budget of $50,000 to spend.

The feeling here is that Day is absolutely exhausted, and if he does not get off to a sensational start like he did in Illinois when he fired 61-63 in the first two rounds, he won't have enough gas in the tank to finish. Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth seem a bit off as well.

Here's the six-man team we think can win this tournament and bring home a huge cash prize.

Henrik Stenson69.785.9$10,500
Zach Johnson69.771.4$8,500
Bubba Watson69.385.8$8,700
Louis Oosthuizen70.260.7$7,700
Patrick Reed7075.0$7,600
Jimmy Walker70.372.4$6,900

Henrik Stenson, $10,500

It was just two years ago that Henrik Stenson was the golfer on the hot streak, and he was brilliant in the playoffs before taking the top prize in the TOUR Championship.

Stenson has not been quite as sharp this year, as he has not won any tournaments this year. However, he has finished second three times and he has won more than $4.1 million. He has been in contention regularly, and he has the complete game to win the tournament that brings the 30 best players in 2015 together.

Most importantly, Stenson knows he belongs and he knows he can win. Some players may quake and shake on Sunday, but the 39-year-old Swede knows he belongs with the best golfers in the world.

Zach Johnson, $8,500

The 39-year-old Johnson has enjoyed a remarkable year, picking up the British Open championship in July and showing a remarkable sense of cool and calm when the pressure was highest.

Johnson is respected by his peers for his ability to play well around the greens in tough situations. In addition to the major championship, Johnson also has a third-place finish and nine top-10 finishes this season, and that has allowed him to earn more than $4.5 million.

Johnson is not one of the tour's big bombers, but he is one of the most accurate hitters. He ranks seventh in driving accuracy, as he finds the fairway 71.37 percent of the time, and he also is seventh in scoring with an average round of 68.766.

Bubba Watson, $8,700

Georgia is clearly a state that Watson feels quite comfortable in, as he has won two Masters championships (2012 and 2014).

When a golfer wins the green jacket twice, it lets the world know that he is capable of winning anytime he gets off to a good start, and that is certainly the case with Watson.

If it wasn't for Day and Spieth, Watson might very well be leading the Player of the Year conversation. He has two tournament victories to his credit, three second-place finishes and two more third-place showings. Watson has been in the top 10 nine times, and he has earned more than $6.5 million this year.

Watson, of course, is one of the PGA Tour's signature long-hitters. He is averaging 316.9 yards off the tee, and that ranks second on the tour. He also ranks first in strokes gained tee to green and fourth in birdie average per round.

Watson clearly has a chance to bring home the top prize, and he is a must for our fantasy team.

Louis Oosthuizen, $7,700

Louis Oosthuizen didn't make it into the TOUR Championship by much, as he ranks 29th of the 30 players in the tournament.

However, nobody in the field is taking him lightly. Oosthuizen is a remarkable player who has one of the most picturesque swings on the tour.

That swing has allowed him to finish second two times this year, and he has six top-10 finishes. The South African has earned more than $3.2 million this year.

Players respect Oosthuizen because he usually comes up big in the most important tournaments. His two second-place finishes came in the U.S. Open and the British Open.

He is a big-time competitor capable stringing four excellent rounds together.
