World Indoor Lacrosse Championship 2015 Results: Monday Scores, Updated Schedule

Daniel RogersSep 21, 2015

As the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship progressed, similar narratives from the last three iterations of the tournament started to play out again.

Despite scrappy play from some relative outsiders, the group stages developed with Canada, the Iroquois Nation and the United States—the top three teams in 2003, 2007 and 2011—looking like the teams to beat and only a major upset standing between them and the semifinals.

But that doesn’t mean the other teams are going down without a fight, and Monday provided a solid starting point for those teams hoping to displace the three powerhouses at the top of the sport.

Israel 14, Finland 4

Through its first three games of the tournament, Finland had performed well, losing by a goal to Australia before taking home wins against Switzerland and Turkey.

But Monday didn’t produce the same result for Finland, as the team ran into a buzz saw in the form of Israel.

The top team in Group Green, Israel had also won two of its first three games but didn’t waste much time in making it three of four with an easy dispatching of Finland. Jumping out of the gates strong, Israel held a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and a 13-1 advantage heading into the final period.

Led by a Daniel Deckelbaum hat trick and Chad Culp’s seven-point day, Israel was the better team in every aspect of the game, holding Finland scoreless for 37 minutes, 12 seconds en route to the comfortable win.

Next up for both teams, Finland gets a 10:30 a.m. ET matchup in the Onondaga Arena on Tuesday with Australia, while Israel will follow that game with a tilt against Ireland at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Serbia 9, Switzerland 7

Switzerland did its best to battle back late against Serbia but couldn’t overcome a huge deficit heading into the fourth quarter, falling 9-7.

With the Serbians jumping out to a 6-2 lead at halftime, Switzerland was forced to fight an uphill battle but couldn’t overcome the deficit and a monster performance by Ryan Pavic.

Pavic finished the game with five goals, while the Gajic brothers, Aleksandar and Ilija, finished with eight total points to continue their stellar tournament.

It was a huge result for Serbia, which has now won back-to-back games after dispatching Germany 11-10 on Sunday. On the other hand, the Swiss lost for the fourth time in as many games despite giving up their fewest amount of goals in a game so far.

With the win, the Serbians set up a game against Turkey at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday at the Village Pavilion, while Switzerland will look to pick up the pieces against Germany at 2 p.m. ET.

Ireland 12, Australia 4

Heading into the game, the Australians were undefeated and the tournament's leading scorers by a wide margin, but the Irish defense proved stout—allowing only 8.25 goals per game—and shut down Australia in a 12-4 victory.

Despite scoring 21 goals in each of its last two contests, Australia could get nothing going Monday, and Ireland took advantage to secure an easy win.

Goals from Caleb Hall and Tim Ratje for the Australians tied the game at 2-2 midway through the first, but six straight and nine of the next 10 goals gave Ireland an insurmountable lead heading into the fourth. An eight-point day from Stephen Keogh was the highlight, with Brian Gillis recording five of his own.

The Irish move on to face a tough Israeli side at 1:30 p.m. ET at the Onondaga Arena, which will be preceded by a matchup between Australia and Finland at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Turkey 21, Germany 16

A seesaw first half saw plenty of drama between Turkey and Germany on Monday, but a dominant second half by the Turks was too much to overcome as the Germans fell 21-16.

Despite taking a lead into halftime, coming off a 7-3 second quarter, the Germans couldn’t keep up with Turkey, which unleashed a 12-goal second half that was spurred on by Anthony Terranova and Dave Deriso.

Terranova and Deriso, the tournament’s two leaders in points and goals, finished with 10 and nine points, respectively, while Germany’s Brendan Shea finished with a seven-goal game of his own in an attempt to spur the Germans to victory.

The Germans lacked the firepower to keep up with the high-flying Turks, who are averaging 15 goals per game through their first four and will look to continue that trend against a Serbian side that is allowing just 10.75 goals per game Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET at the Village Pavilion. Germany will face Switzerland at 2 p.m. ET and look to bounce back from its third defeat in the tournament.

United States 13, England 9

Well, that was unexpected. Despite heading into the game as heavy underdogs, England did everything in its power to hang around with the United States, even taking a 7-6 lead into halftime.

But in the end, the first major upset of the tournament was not to be as the U.S. battled back for a slim victory in the second half, 13-9, thanks in large part to a balanced attack. Multiple-goal games from Casey Powell, Garrett Thul and Joe Walters were enough to see off the English upset bid.

Walters, in particular, who continues to play well for the U.S., had a big game, finishing with eight points, including six assists.

The United States desperately needed the win to keep momentum and spirits high heading into Tuesday night’s headline matchup against the three-time defending champion Canadians at the Onondaga Arena at 7:30 p.m. ET.

England is rewarded for its valiant effort against the U.S. with back-to-back games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Iroquois and Canada, respectively, with the former scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET.

Canada 19, Czech Republic 2

The Canadians are on a mission to win their fourth consecutive WILC title, and after taking down the Iroquois in its opening game of the tournament, the Czech Republic was nothing more than a stepping stone for the reigning champs.

Straight from the word "go," it was clear that Canada was sporting the better squad, scoring five straight goals before the Czech Republic could even get on the board, carrying a 9-1 lead into halftime and finishing the game with a score of 19-2.

Adam Jones had a hat trick before halftime, while Mark Matthews and Dhane Smith both had huge games of their own. There was no stopping Canada on the night, and the team to beat looks to be in top form as the tournament progresses.

Following the big win, Canada will face off against another of the tournament favorites, the United States, in a 7:30 p.m. ET matchup Tuesday, while the Czechs get a day of rest before taking on the Iroquois on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
