Monday Recap

Israel Defeats Finland, 14-4

Israel wasted little time establishing who was going to win Monday’s first showdown.

It jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead during the contest’s first 10 minutes with an onslaught of scoring opportunities. While Finland finally got on the board, Israel responded with an 8-0 run to put the game well out of reach at 13-1.

Roope Jokela somewhat salvaged Finland’s outing down the stretch with three goals of his own, but the team never had much of a chance at a miracle comeback.

Serbia Defeats Switzerland, 9-7

A miracle comeback was very much in play in this defensive slugfest.

Serbia seized momentum with a 7-2 lead just more than halfway through the game and held an 8-3 advantage with less than 20 minutes remaining.

Switzerland then scored four goals in a 14-minute stretch and trimmed the lead to a manageable 9-7, but it couldn’t find the back of the net in the final two minutes on the way to the difficult loss. Even in defeat, Switzerland outshot Serbia, 51-42, but couldn’t counter Ryan Pavic's five goals for the victorious side.

Ireland Defeats Australia, 12-4

This game was essentially over at halftime when Ireland jumped out to an 8-2 lead after six straight goals. Australia never got closer than 8-3, and Ireland put the contest on ice with three straight scores in the third period to stretch its advantage to 11-3.

It was not difficult to see why Ireland won. It enjoyed a 14-5 advantage in the faceoff department and outshot Australia, 69-32.

Ireland controlled possession and dictated the tempo throughout the game, and the scoreboard reflected the effort.

Turkey Defeats Germany, 21-16

Turkey and Germany battled in a shootout during Monday’s most thrilling contest. While Germany outshot Turkey, 55-51, and won 26 faceoffs compared to Turkey’s 15, the victorious Turkey side capitalized on its opportunities.

As the final score indicated, it was a back-and-forth tussle. Turkey jumped out to a 7-3 lead before Germany battled back to take a 10-8 advantage. Turkey then seized control in a critical stretch in the third period to open up a 15-11 advantage.

Although Germany closed the gap to 16-15 and was within two with less than four minutes remaining, Turkey put home the final three goals during a furious closing stretch.

United States Defeats England, 13-9

Monday’s fifth contest saw another back-and-forth affair between an imposing United States side that finished third in the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship and England.

The United States jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and appeared to be on its way to victory, but England stormed back and took a 4-3 advantage and extended the lead to 7-5. However, the Americans answered with a four-goal run of their own in the late second and early third periods and never looked back.

The United States clinched it with four of the final five goals.

While it was a close battle on the scoreboard, the stats tell a different story. The Americans dominated on faceoffs with a 25-1 advantage and outshot England, 79-34. It was clear who the better team was, although it took a strong closing effort to fend off England.

Canada Defeats Czech Republic, 19-2

Canada is the defending world champion and arguably the best team in the entire field this time around. It certainly looked the part Monday during a 19-2 beatdown of Czech Republic.

Canada received four goals from Mark Matthews, four goals from Dhane Smith and three goals from Adam Jones in a contest that was never in doubt. Czech Republic scored in the second period to make it 5-1, but Canada responded with 13 straight goals on the way to an easy victory.

In all, Canada won 17 face offs compared to six from Czech Republic and outshot the opposition, 83-49.
