USA vs. England 2015 World Lacrosse Championship Game Date and Start Time

Daniel RogersSep 21, 2015

A 13-9 defeat at the hands of Iroquois in the United States’ opening fixture of the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship was disappointing—especially after playing hard throughout but failing to close out the game. But a loss to the Czech Republic would have been another story entirely.

Team USA would get its tournament on track Sunday by taking down the Czechs 14-7, even holding a nine-goal lead heading into the fourth quarter of play before the score was pulled into much more respectable territory.

Now, sitting at 1-1 in the Blue Division and in first place—Canada has only played one match thus far, though—the United States will take on last-place England Monday afternoon. England are coming off a day of rest following their 9-7 defeat against the Czech Republic Saturday.

Sunday was exactly what the United States needed, with a relatively easy matchup against the Czech Republic showing off exactly what the Americans were capable of in the tournament while simultaneously covering up the flaws shown in the opener against Iroquois.

Actually trailing 1-0 early on, the U.S. would rip off six consecutive goals and never look back against the Czechs. Now, the team looks to build on its momentum from Sunday afternoon in a game against a seemingly overmatched England side.

While the U.S. has a history of success in tournaments past, finishing in the bronze-medal position each of the last three iterations, the English are still looking to make an impact on the international lacrosse scene.

A defeat at the hands of the Czech Republic in England’s only game so far didn’t inspire much confidence, and with only one player, Cole Shafer, recording multiple points so far, the English lack the firepower to keep up with a talented U.S. squad.

Hat tricks from Kevin Buchanan and Garrett Thul against the Czech Republic were signs of what the United States is capable of offensively, with the team’s leader in points, Joe Walters, adding a tally of his own to go with a ridiculous five assists.

One place where England will look to take advantage, though, is on faceoffs, where the team ranks fifth at 50 percent won, even though the United States ranks third with 63 percent won. If the English can carry an advantage, that will be their best chance at a monumental upset.

England’s goaltender, Nick Rose, has also had quite the tournament for himself thus far, even on a small sample size, ranking third in the field with an 82 percent save rate on 40 shots faced against the Czech Republic. That shot total will likely increase against the United States, and Rose needs to stand on his head to keep the U.S. from running away with the game.

Scheduling so many games in such a short span of time makes this international competition more of a marathon than a sprint, and the U.S. needs to continue to build on its momentum from Sunday night as the tournament goes into the latter stages, especially if the squad hopes to secure an elusive title.

With no offense intended to England, the United States' biggest threat in their Monday afternoon matchup is looking forward to their Tuesday night game against the three-time reigning champs, Canada. Team USA must be wary of overlooking the English with the champs just over the horizon.

A top-two finish in the Blue Division guarantees a spot in the semifinals, and the U.S. could take a big step toward just that with a win against England Monday. Though, a tough English defense will do everything in its power to slow down the high-flying United States attack.
