Solheim Cup 2015 Results: USA vs. Europe Winner, Points and Final Standings

Gianni VerschuerenSep 20, 2015

The USA completed a stunning comeback in the singles to win the 2015 Solheim Cup on Sunday in what became a grudge encounter. The morning fourballs were overshadowed by a controversial incident involving Suzann Pettersen, but the Americans bounced back, winning eight of the singles matches to win 14 ½ to 13 ½.

Paula Creamer won the deciding point against Sandra Gal, comfortably taking the match 4 and 3, and as shared by the event's official Twitter account, it marked quite a comeback:

Here are the full results from the singles:

Europe entered the day leading 8-5 with three of the fourball matches still to be completed, and major controversy struck almost immediately in the match between the duo of Pettersen and Charley Hull and Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome.

With the two teams all square, Lee missed a birdie putt that would have given the USA the 17th, and while the European team started walking away, Lee picked up the ball, as she thought it had been conceded.

Pettersen denied conceding the putt, however, leaving the American team speechless and down a shot. Europe would eventually win the match two up, but the incident left a bitter taste in just about everyone's mouth. Both Lee and Hull were seen crying, and plenty of pundits and fellow golfers hammered Pettersen for her decision, including Eddie Pepperell:

The Daily Mirror's David McDonnell also wasn't too happy:

Even Dame Laura Davies, who played in 12 Solheim Cups, was “disgusted” by what she saw. Speaking to Sky Sports 4 (h/t Press Association, for the Daily Mail), she said:

"

Disgusted. We have got our best player, Charley Hull, who has just won a point and she is in floods of tears. That tells you the wrong thing was done.

How Suzann can justify that I will never, ever know. We are all fierce competitors but ultimately it's unfair. We have to play week in, week out together and you do not do something like that to a fellow pro.

Poor old Alison Lee must think 'I hope I never play a Solheim Cup again'. She has had food poisoning and now she has been wronged by one of the most senior players in golf and (who) used to be one of the most respected players.

I know (Pettersen) is angry and justifying everything, but she has let herself down and she has certainly let her team down. I am so glad I am not on that team this time.

"

At the end of the fourballs, Europe held a 10-6 lead, but the atmosphere around the St. Leon-Rot Golf Club was as icy as it gets. Team USA appeared determined to use the incident as motivation, as shared by the LPGA's official Twitter account:

Carlota Ciganda and Lexi Thompson halved their match, but the USA dominated the singles the rest of the way. Europe managed just three wins, thanks to Karine Icher, Melissa Reid and Anna Nordqvist, and with the exception of Gerina Piller's win over Caroline Masson, all of the Americans won their matches by two holes or more.

As shared by the Golf Channel's Randall Mell, captain Juli Inkster told reporters she had been firing up her troops to do something like this all week long:

According to Justin Ray of the Golf Channel, it marked the largest final session comeback in Solheim Cup history, and the controversy of the fourballs likely made the win even sweeter for the American team. Lee bounced back from the setback to beat Gwladys Nocera, and Angela Stanford took some sweet revenge by beating Pettersen 2 and 1.

BBC Sports' Phil McNulty thinks the victory probably tasted extra sweet:

Sunday's win was the first for the USA since 2009, who now hold a 9-5 advantage over Europe. The 2017 Solheim Cup will take place at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa.
