Oscar Pistorius' Parole Request Rejected

Adam WellsSep 19, 2015

Oscar Pistorius will remain in jail after his parole request was rejected Monday, according to Fox Sports. No date for a future parole hearing has been set.

In October 2014, Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of culpable homicide following the 2013 shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Per the CNN report, South African law states that Pistorius was eligible to be released "after serving one-sixth of his sentence in prison—in his case 10 months."

On August 19, two days before Pistorius was scheduled to be released, South Africa Justice Minister Michael Masutha issued a statement, per BBC.com, explaining the decision to delay Pistorius' release from prison.

"One-sixth of a five-year sentence is 10 months and at the time the decision was made Mr. Pistorius had served only over six months of his sentence," Masutha's statement said.

Also in the BBC.com report, a legal source is cited as saying that it could take "months" before the parole board reviews the decision.

The CNN report noted that in the event Pistorius does get released from prison, the prosecution in the case is appealing a murder charge that he was acquitted of by South Africa's Supreme Court.

The 28-year-old made history at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London when he became the first double leg amputee to take part in an Olympic event during the 400-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay.
