Solheim Cup 2015 Results: Friday Points and Standings for USA vs. Europe

Christopher SimpsonSep 18, 2015

Europe took a 4-2 lead over the USA in the 2015 Solheim Cup on Friday, which saw play suspended for darkness after the afternoon session was interrupted by a thunderstorm.

The teams were evenly matched at 2-2 after the morning's foursomes, but Europe won the first two fourballs to take a healthy but far from insurmountable two-point lead into Saturday.

In the matches set to resume in the morning, the teams are all square through 17 in the first, and Europe are 1-up through 15 in the other.

Morgan Pressel and Paula Creamer drew first blood as they put the USA 1-0 up.

A bogey for Anna Nordqvist and Suzann Pettersen put the Americans ahead after the first hole, but Pressel and Creamer returned the favour at the fourth.

However, birdies at the seventh, 11th and 13th and a European bogey at the ninth gave the U.S. a commanding lead, with Europe only able to pull one back with a bogey at the 14th. LPGA shared the highlights:

English duo Charley Hull and Melissa Reid levelled proceedings in a narrow but comfortable win over Michelle Wie and Brittany Lincicome.

Cristie Kerr and Lexi Thompson raced into a 4-0 lead within the first six holes in their foursome with Karine Icher and Azahara Munoz and held on for the point despite three consecutive European birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th.

Four birdies for Sandra Gal and Catriona Matthew was enough to ensure the teams were all square at the end of the first session, though.

In sharp contrast to their performance in the morning, Pressel and Creamer were well off the pace during the fourballs, as Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall made short work of them.

Birdies at the third, eighth, 10th and 11th for Europe earned them the victory as Nordqvist in particular stood out. Per the tournament's Twitter feed and the Golf Channel's Randall Mell, Pressel admitted the session was a struggle and also stoked the fire ahead of Saturday:

Carlota Ciganda's performance in the third fourball match was particularly notable, as the Solheim Cup on Twitter indicates:

If the Spaniard can maintain her momentum in the 18th on Saturday, she could clinch another vital point for Europe. Likewise, if Sandra Gal and Caroline Masson can do the same, Europe would take a phenomenal 6-2 lead into the day's originally scheduled play.

However, expect the USA to rally after being let off by the weather, with a determined Pressel and Creamer likely to be spearheading an American comeback ahead of what's sure to be a thrilling final day on Sunday.
