Georgia Football: What You Should and Shouldn't Be Concerned About After Week 2

Brian JonesSep 18, 2015

The Georgia Bulldogs are 2-0 after being Louisiana-Monroe and Vanderbilt. That was expected, as the Bulldogs were heavy favorites going into both games, and they won each game by double digits. The Bulldogs were able to do a lot of good things in those two games, and they will be able to build on their strengths moving forward.

But with the thick of the SEC schedule coming up, including a duel with South Carolina on Saturday, there are also some things that have Bulldogs fans concerned.

Here are a few things fans should—and shouldn’t—be concerned about after Week 2.

Shouldn’t Be Concerned: Run Game

It’s not a surprise that the Bulldogs have been able to run the ball well at the start of the season—the team led the SEC in rushing yards per game last year with 259. So far this season, the Bulldogs have rushed for 263 yards per game, and that should stay consistent throughout the season with a backfield that includes Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.

Chubb is off to a very good start this season as he has rushed for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Michel has done a nice job spelling Chubb with 97 yards on 18 carries and one score.

Once the Bulldogs are well into the SEC part of their schedule, the run game will be relied on more often, especially with the way the passing game has gone.

Shouldn’t Be Concerned: Run Defense

One of the Bulldogs’ weaknesses last season was stopping the run, as they allowed 167 yards per game. They could not stop the run in the South Carolina, Florida and Georgia Tech games—the three matchups Georgia lost last season.

So far the Bulldogs are off to a good start in run defense, allowing 75 yards per game. They limited ULM to 45 rushing yards and Vanderbilt to 105 yards.

The Bulldogs will face betting running backs as the season moves forward, such as South Carolina's Brandon Wilds, Alabama's Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake, Auburn's Peyton Barber and Kentucky's Boom Williams. It will be a challenge to stop the run consistently, but the Bulldogs have an experienced defensive line that has played a lot of football together.

In fact, the starting defensive line, which includes Sterling Bailey, John Atkins and Chris Mayes, are all seniors. Those guys have the ability to control the line of scrimmage, which will allow linebackers Jordan Jenkins, Leonard Floyd, Lorenzo Carter and Jake Ganus to make plays in the run game.

Should Be Concerned: Quarterback

There are a few minor things the Bulldogs should be concerned about like pass defense and special teams. However, the biggest concern has to be the quarterback position.

Greyson Lambert looked solid in the ULM game, completing eight of his 12 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. But when he played Vanderbilt last week, Lambert struggled to start the game as he missed on his first five passes.

Fortunately, Lambert was able to pick things up in the second half, finishing 11-of-21 with 116 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.

There is no doubt the run game is the strength of the offense and will continue to be going forward. But the quarterback will have to make plays in order for the Bulldogs to get through the rest of the schedule and win the SEC.

Lambert needs to play better, and it starts on Saturday when the Bulldogs take on a South Carolina team that is coming off a disappointing loss to Kentucky. If he struggles and the Bulldogs lose, it would not surprise anyone if head coach Mark Richt decided to give Brice Ramsey the starting job moving forward.
