Recap
Varga's dominance at the Aquathlon is moving into Barry Bonds in the early-2000s territory. The Slovakian star captured his fourth gold medal at this event since 2010, including his third in the last four years.
The 26-year-old finished seven seconds ahead of Russia's Igor Polyanskiy to secure his title and prompted his perfect simple response on Twitter:
Speaking to Tri247.com after the race, Varga sounded surprised by how the race played out because of the competition he was facing:
"I didn’t expect it would be that easy today, I thought it would be much harder because the field was pretty strong, as you can see with Polyanskiy and Mcelroy. So I thought they all would give me a struggle, but I feel really good today, on the run especially. So I am really happy that I could win today.
"
This victory by Varga also puts him in an excellent position leading up to the Summer Olympics next year. He previously competed in the triathlon three years ago in London but finished a disappointing 22nd despite the best split time in the swimming portion.
Abrosimova dominated the women's event, defeating fellow Russian Elena Danilova by 50 seconds. She had to pull away after the swimming portion, exiting the water in a three-way tie with Hannah Kitchen and Anastasia Gorbunova.
When the running finished, Abrosimova was excellent with a time of 17 minutes and 20 seconds. Joselyn Brea finished 13 seconds behind the Russian in second place. She celebrated crossing the finish line first with her own personal trophy, per TriathlonLive:
In a nice counter to that singular dominant performance, Yhousman Perdomo and Yaroslav Potanin put on a fantastic two-man show in the men's junior event, with Perdomo coming out on top by one second.
On a day in which athletes young and old were able to showcase their skills—either in an effort to showcase what they can do in the future or riding off into the sunset by finishing one of the great tests of endurance and athleticism—the Aquathlon set an excellent tempo for the rest of the weekend.
Thursday's action at the World Triathlon Series features four major events, including the Under-23 Men's World Championships and Age-Group Sprint World Championships.
With Varga having his day in the sun on Wednesday, things are open for the rest of the field to take center stage. This was an excellent warm-up act to a week of competition that has just gotten started.
