Cena gave a fist bump to one of his fans after the match, per WWE Universe:
Rollins attempted to run off with the belt, but Cena ensured that wouldn't happen, per WWE:
WrestleZone.com noted a reoccurring trend Sunday night:
Rollins beat Cena for the title in a champion-versus-champion match at SummerSlam thanks to some help from Jon Stewart. Cena exercised his rematch clause, though, which forced Rollins to compete in two contests at Night of Champions.
Rollins and Cena have had issues with each other, dating back to last year, and their rivalry was renewed after Rollins was lucky enough to retain his world title against Brock Lesnar at Battleground because of interference from The Undertaker.
Cena claimed that Rollins was an embarrassment to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and insisted that he had made the U.S. title a more important entity. That resulted in a clash at SummerSlam, but Rollins was once again able to weasel his way out with a victory.
Things got tougher for Rollins after that, as he has been forced to fight battles on multiple fronts. Even so, the former architect of The Shield has remained defiant, according to WWE Universe on Twitter:
Both Cena and Sting got the better of Rollins on multiple occasions leading up to Night of Champions, and it seemed as though the odds were stacked against him.
Because of that, even one of his biggest supporters, announcer Corey Graves, doubted Rollins' ability to get the job done at the pay-per-view:
Cena was a huge favorite leading up to Night of Champions, as he often is, and while Rollins usually has a tactic or two up his sleeve, Cena is no stranger to finding ways to win in the face of adversity.
Cena struck a major blow against Rollins and The Authority, although having Rollins drop the U.S. title may not be a bad thing since Cena is in a better position to give it the focus it deserves.
Most figured Rollins' run as United States champ would be brief since he also has the world title to worry about, which ultimately proved to be true. Now Cena has an opportunity to pick up where he left off when he lost the belt to Rollins at SummerSlam.
Cena managed to take the championship from a mere prop to one of the most prestigious titles on the roster after winning it from Rusev at WrestleMania. He and Rollins had another great match with the championship hanging in the balance at Night of Champions, and one can only assume that Cena will keep that momentum going, potentially with the help of the open challenges that brought the title out of the doldrums in the first place.
