La Liga Table 2015: Sunday's Week 3 Results and Updated Standings

Matt JonesSep 13, 2015

Celta Vigo missed the chance to go atop the La Liga table, as they drew 3-3 with Las Palmas in a thrilling clash on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Villarreal maintained their impressive recent form, winning 3-1 at Granada. Also, Athletic Club picked up their first win of the campaign, beating Getafe 3-1 at the San Mames, and Malaga were unable to find a way past a stubborn Eibar team, as they drew 0-0 in the last match of the day.

Here’s how the table is shaping up after another absorbing day of action from the Spanish top flight.

10-Man Las Palmas Produce Stunning Comeback

A Las Palmas side down to 10 men for 79 minutes battled back from two goals down against Celta to snatch a priceless point in what was a gripping game at Balaidos Stadium.

Celta seemed poised for a routine victory in this contest. Javi Varas was sent off for the visitors on 11 minutes, and Fabian Orellana put the hosts ahead from the subsequent spot-kick. Then Daniel Wass doubled their advantage five minutes later, and the match looked to be over.

Las Palmas were always in the game, though, and showed signs of some resistance with a Sergio Araujo goal on 23 minutes. But a Nolito strike three minutes after the break seemed to settle this one; how wrong the majority of us were.

Araujo pounced just after the hour mark to reduce the deficit again, prompting some nervousness in among the Celta supporters. It turned out to be warranted, as the hosts were done on the counter-attack by Las Palmas, with David Simon rounding off a sweeping move. They eventually withstood some huge late pressure to take a valuable point from the game.

As noted by OptaJose, it was a pretty remarkable showing from the visitors, who were promoted from the second tier last season:

Villarreal made sure they kept pace with the leaders and were superb in a 3-1 victory over Granada at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes.

After a tight first half, both teams showed a little more ambition after the break, with the visitors taking the lead in the 49th minute. Manu Trigueros was the man who broke the deadlock, but it was a shot that Andres Fernandez should have saved.

Then, just two minutes later, Villarreal doubled their advantage thanks to Cedric Bakambu. Fran Rico gave Granada some hope as he scored with 16 minutes remaining, but as the hosts pushed forward, it left space for Villarreal to exploit, allowing Samuel Garcia to make the game safe following fine work from Adrian and Denis Suarez.

As we can see here, it’s been a while since the Yellow Submarine have won away from home:

Athletic Club also won by a 3-1 scoreline, with Aritz Aduriz proving to be a major menace to Getafe once again.

The veteran striker bagged a goal either side of half-time to propel his side to an important win. In between were goals from Raul Garcia, who made it 2-0 to Athletic, and an Emiliano Velazquez strike to half the deficit.

Getafe will be sick of the powerful forward; as we can see here courtesy of Infostrada Sports, he always seems to score against them:

In the final match on Sunday, Malaga and Eibar played out an arduous stalemate. It's a result that ends Eibar's winning run, having picked up victories in both of their two games so far; nonetheless, you suspect they'll be delighted to take a point from the Rosaleda.

The round concludes on Monday when Rayo Vallecano host Deportivo La Coruna. Both sides are still searching for their first victory of the new season.

The results mean that Barcelona are the only team left in the division with a perfect record. Next up for them is a trip to play Celta, where the hosts will be desperate to put their late surrender behind them and move ahead of the reigning champions.
