Floyd Mayweather Retires: Twitter Reacts as Boxing Star Announces Retirement

Joseph ZuckerSep 12, 2015

Following his decisive victory over Andre Berto in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather Jr. confirmed his in-ring career is over—at least for now.

"You have to know when to hang it up," Mayweather said in his post-fight interview, per ESPN's Brian Campbell. "It's my time to hang it up. ... Nothing else for me to prove in the sport of boxing."

The judges scored it 117-111, 118-110 and 120-108 unanimously in favor of Mayweather, per Showtime Sports. Berto didn't mount much of a challenge, but in terms of dominance, Mayweather couldn't have gone out with a more conclusive result.

Amir Khan, who in August essentially accused Mayweather of ducking him, put any ill will toward the unbeaten champion aside and praised his work in the ring:

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant kept it short with his appreciation of Mayweather's otherworldly skills:

Comedian Kevin Hart also celebrated the 38-year-old:

Oscar De La Hoya sounded happy to see Mayweather go:

While a lot of talk following Saturday night will be about Mayweather's overall legacy in the sport, Boxing Memes is looking out for the future of the so-called "Money Team." What are the members of The Money Team going to do now with Mayweather calling it quits?

There's also a segment of fans who watched Mayweather fights hoping he would suffer the first defeat of his career. The Toronto Star's Bruce Arthur is wondering what avenue he'll have to take for that schadenfreude:

However, ESPN's Skip Bayless and Basketball Insiders' Tommy Beer are among the many skeptics as to the finality of Mayweather's retirement:

You wonder whether Mayweather would be able to pass up the allure of one more fight. Not only would he surpass Rocky Marciano's historic 49-0 record with one more win, but he could also collect a massive payday if he were to fight Manny Pacquiao in a rematch or take on any other serious welterweight contender.

Milwaukee Bucks point guard Michael Carter-Williams envisions Mayweather moving up a weight class for a superfight with Gennady Golovkin:

Both fights would be tempting for Mayweather, but until he says otherwise, fans will have to assume Saturday night was the final time they'll get to see the legendary fighter step into the ring.
