England vs. Australia: Winners and Losers from 4th ODI

Chris TealeSep 11, 2015

England are level in the five-match one-day international series against visitors Australia after victory in the fourth ODI by three wickets.

The tourists made 299 for seven batting first at Headingley but saw that target overhauled with relative ease in what was an entertaining game.

It means the series is now deadlocked at 2-2 with the fifth and final ODI to follow Sunday at Old Trafford. It will cap off what has been a fascinating summer of international cricket.

But before we get to the fifth ODI, let’s first take a look back at the fourth and pick out some winners and losers.

Winner: David Willey

1 of 6

England left-armer David Willey got things rolling early as he reduced Australia to 30 for three by dismissing Joe Burns, Steven Smith and Aaron Finch in quick succession.

Willey then showed off his batting prowess as he made 12 not out at nine and hit the winning runs—a huge six—to end an impressive game.

Loser: Joe Burns

2 of 6

Opener Joe Burns has had a poor run of late at the top of the order for Australia, and this game was no better as he was dismissed for just two.

He never looked convincing at the crease, and after a torturous 10-ball knock, he dragged a ball from Willey onto his stumps to put himself out of his misery.

Winner: Eoin Morgan

3 of 6

Winning captain Eoin Morgan’s golden summer continued as he made 92 from 92 deliveries to anchor England’s successful run chase.

He hit a total of 10 boundaries and always looked in complete control—an indication that all is right with his game at the moment.

Loser: Steven Smith

4 of 6

Australia captain Steven Smith has been a little inconsistent with the bat in recent times, and that continued as he made just five runs before being dismissed by Willey.

It was a superb delivery from Willey that trapped Smith LBW, and that precipitated a tough game for the skipper as he ran out of reliable bowling options later on.

Winner: Glenn Maxwell

5 of 6

Glenn Maxwell continues to be an all-action cricketer, and he impressed with the bat, ball and in the field Friday.

Having made a scintillating 85 from 64 balls, Maxwell removed the dangerous Jonny Bairstow then took two brilliant catches to dismiss Eoin Morgan and Liam Plunkett.

Loser: James Pattinson

6 of 6

It was another difficult game for James Pattinson, as the Australian seamer saw his nine wicketless overs disappear for 73 runs at an economy rate of 8.11 runs per over.

He was fast with the ball but a little on the wild side, as indicated by the dozen boundaries he conceded and the three extras he gave away in a tough outing.
