Tiger Woods Announces Decision to Play in Frys.com Open

Adam WellsSep 11, 2015

Tiger Woods hasn't been seen in a PGA Tour event since finishing 10th at the Wyndham Championship, but he will be making an early return for the 2015-16 wraparound schedule at the Frys.com Open in October.

Per NBC Bay Area on Twitter, citing Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Woods will take part in the annual tournament that takes place from October 14 through 18 in Napa, California.

There have been rumblings for some time about Woods participating in this year's Frys.com Open. ESPN.com's Bob Harig reported in June that the 39-year-old was going to "make good on a commitment to commissioner Tim Finchem" that he made to take part in the tournament.

Harig's report also notes this is the first time Woods will be playing in an event that falls in the PGA Tour's wraparound schedule, which was adopted in 2013 to have the official season run from October through September.

The event is turning out to be a star-studded affair, as Rory McIlroy will join Woods among the marquee players to participate. Woods last played in the Frys.com Open during the 2011 season, finishing 30th overall with a score of seven under par.

Getting back on the course in an official PGA Tour event will be good for Woods heading into next season. He finished this season off strong, recording his only top-10 finish, and needs repetitions to maintain that level of performance.

Last season was the worst of Woods' career, missing five cuts in 12 tournaments, so getting a head start on next season should put him in a much better position to compete in the major events as the calendar flips to 2016.
