Gundogan's Season Ends Early

Friday, May 5

As reported by ESPN FC, Gundogan won't be featuring for Germany during Euro 2016 after suffering yet another serious problem. Per Goal's Sam Lee, the 25-year-old has dislocated his kneecap.

Dortmund are fighting a losing battle against Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title and will meet the Bavarians in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday, May 21.

Gundogan has a chequered history when it comes to his fitness. A back injury ruled him out for almost the entire 2013-14 season. It took him some time to return to his best following that setback, but he has been a key part of manager Thomas Tuchel's side this term, starting a total of 22 matches, per WhoScored.com

He is a focused presence in the centre of midfield, where his distribution and athleticism are key to Dortmund's attacking movement. In Gundogan's absence, more of the pressure will fall on 20-year-old Julian Weigl to control the play in the centre of the park.

While the news is bad for Dortmund, it's even worse for Gundogan. Per Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC, he's been strongly linked with a move to Manchester City, and his value will only drop after suffering yet another serious injury.

His absence will also hurt Germany's chances of success during Euro 2016. The current world champions boast plenty of talent throughout the side, but Gundogan was expected to start for Die Mannschaft. Instead, manager Joachim Low will likely turn to the likes of Sami Khedira and Christoph Kramer.
