Week 1 of the 2009-10 NFL football betting season has come and gone; the following is a breakdown of some of the more intriguing match-ups football fans across the world will be taking in throughout Week 2. If you are looking for winning football betting picks for week 2 of the NFL season be sure to visit Touthouse.com and buy Alex Smart’s expert NFL analysis each Sunday.
New England Patriots (-3.5, 47) vs. New York Jets
The Patriots looked to be well on their way towards an 0-1 SU & ATS mark with just over two minutes remaining in their MNF match-up with the Buffalo Bills, but the football gods granted their fans wish of a miracle. It came in the form of Leodis McKelvin who inexplicably returned and consequently fumbled the kick return; the rest as they say, is history. The Jets shocked many NFL bettors by going into Houston and dominating the favored Texans with a rookie QB leading their charge. The Patriots have won eight consecutive meetings with the Jets in the Meadowlands; that’s something HC Rex Ryan will look to remedy on Sunday.

New Orleans Saints vs. Philadelphia Eagles (pk, 47)
While the Saints got a run for their money against the 0-16 Detroit Lions in their Week 1 match-up, they ultimately went on to win and cover as lofty 14-point chalks. QB Drew Brees had a game for the ages completing 26 of 34 passes for 358 yards and tossed an incredible six TD passes. Philly went into Carolina and dominated winning 38-10, but it lost QB Donovan McNabb to a rib injury which has caused quite a conundrum in Philly since. The ‘over’ is a perfect 4-0 ATS the L/4 meetings, and the Eagles are 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS the L/5 times these teams have hooked up.
Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons (-6, 43)
Save for their opening drive against the Eagles, nothing went right for the Panthers in their 2009 home debut against the Eagles. The defense and special teams were gouged all day, and QB Jake Delhomme was benched after throwing four INT’s. The Falcons shined in their opener against the Dolphins winning 19-7 as four-point chalks. QB Matt Ryan threw for 229 yards and a pair of TDs, and the defense allowed less than 300 overall yards and won the turnover battle 4-0. With both clubs holding serve at home against one another in ‘08, it snapped a streak of five in a row where the visiting team won outright.
Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers (-1.5, 39.5)
Looking to bounce back from an injury plagued 2008 campaign, the Seahawks rolled the division rival Rams by a 28-0 final count and made a mockery of the seven-point closing spread in the process. The offense rolled up over 440 yards of combined offense, while the defense squandered both of the Rams red zone opportunities. The Mike Singletary era kicked off in style in the desert as the Niners upended the defending NFC champion Arizona Cardinals 20-16 as 5.5-point underdogs. Seattle’s won five of its L/6 trips to Frisco.
Baltimore Ravens vs. San Diego Chargers (-3, 40.5)
The Ravens struggled mightily to put the Kansas City Chiefs away all game long, but got a fortuitous cover for their betting backers when RB Willis McGahee punched it into the end zone with just 36 seconds remaining in the game. San Diego, another enormous Week 1 favorite, also struggled to put away the Raiders, but got the go ahead score with 18 seconds left to grab the 24-20 win. The home team is 6-1 ATS the L/7 times these teams have met with the ‘under’ cashing in five of the L/6.
Pittsburgh Steelers (-3, 37.5) vs. Chicago Bears
The Steelers kicked off the 2009-10 NFL season last Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans in a game that saw them fail to cover the closing six-point spread in their 13-10 overtime win. Safety Troy Polamalu was yet another victim of the “Madden Curse” after suffering a knee injury and won’t be available for this game. The Bears fought valiantly against the hated Green Bay Packers, but QB Jay Cutler single handedly cost them the game by throwing four picks. Adding insult to injury was the loss of LB Brian Urlacher who will miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated wrist. The Steelers have won each of the L/3 regular season meetings with the Bears, but Chicago is a perfect 6-0 SU & ATS off a loss against a division rival the L/3 seasons.
New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys (-3.5, 43.5)
Though they allowed a TD to push the closing spread, the Giants dominated the division rival Redskins last week in the Meadowlands. The defense limited Washington to just 85 overall yards on the ground, picked up three sacks, and put points on the board when DT Osi Umenyiora returned a fumble 48-yards for a score. The Cowboys offense looked awfully impressive in last week’s 34-21 covering win in Tampa Bay as QB Tony Romo had a career game throwing for 353 yards and three TDs without an interception. They did however leave a lot to be desired defensively with the Bucs amassing 450 yards of combined offense. The favorite is 4-1 ATS the L/5 meetings, while the ‘under’ has cashed 10 of the L/14 times they’ve squared off in Dallas.
Indianapolis Colts (-3, 42) vs. Miami Dolphins
The Colts looked terribly unimpressive in their 14-12 non-covering win against the Jaguars last Sunday afternoon; the freaking stadium shadows might have played a role with it though. QB Peyton Manning threw for 301 yards and a TD, but the ground game was limited to just 71 yards overall on 31 carries (2.3 YPC). The Colts were very lucky to win the game outright. Miami was even worse in its ’09 debut as the offense turned the ball over four times and gained a total of 259 yards against a retooled Falcons defense. HC Tony Sparano was noticeably upset throughout the entirety of the second half, so expect to see a much different Fins squad take the field Monday night. The underdog is 8-1 ATS the L/9 meetings.
