Recap
Iran wrapped up the gold medal on Saturday, blowing out Russia, 78-54, meaning only the silver and bronze medals were up for grabs on Sunday.
And Gilas Pilipinas and China Blue made sure they snared them.
Needing either a win or a China Blue loss to earn silver, Gilas Pilipinas cruised against an overmatched China White side, sitting one of their stars of the tournament, Terrence Romeo, and cycling through the bench in the second half with the game well out of reach.
Gary David led the way with 22 points, while Jayson Castro added 15 points and four assists and Moala Tautuaa chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. Chien Wei-Ju led the way for China White with 18 points.
“With all the circumstances, I’m pleased with the second-place finish," Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin told the Manila Times. "It’s respectable. It’s not really want you want, but we take the most of it. And there are many positives."
He added, “Like Iran, Japan and Korea, we came here to get better for FIBA Asia. It’s a very difficult format playing eight games in eight days. I think there were positives out of that, but we suffered fatigue and injuries. Importantly, we’ll take the positives from our Jones Cup experience.
That clinched the bronze for China Blue no matter the result of their game against South Korea, though the team ended on a high note with an 80-73 win over South Korea, spoiling a massive effort from Lee Jong-hyun, who scored 31 points. Quincy Davis led the way for China Blue, scoring 13 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.
The United States, meanwhile, concluded a disappointing 3-5 tournament with an overtime loss to New Zealand. Cory Bradford scored 23 points and added four assists for the losing side, while Calvin Warner scored 19 points and pulled down an astonishing 29 rebounds. Brock Roscoe scored 25 points and added five assists in the win, while Ray Turner notched 22 points and 15 rebounds.
Finally, Russia closed out its tournament with a win over Japan, as Andrey Ivanov's 19 points led the way.
The William Jones Cup Mythical Five was also announced after the conclusion of the tournament, featuring tournament MVP Hamed Haddadi and his Iranian teammate, Mehdi Kamrany (Iran), along with Moon Tae-young, Lin Chi-chieh and Castro, per InterAksyon.com.
