Yedlin signed a contract with the north London club in the summer of 2014 and finally completed his move in January of this year, but he only made one substitute appearance for Spurs, according to WhoScored.com.
The speedster is wildly talented and made a huge impression during the 2014 World Cup, as he managed to keep Chelsea star Eden Hazard at bay during the Americans' clash with Belgium after Fabian Johnson had left the pitch with an injury.
Yedlin shows plenty of promise, but he's a raw prospect who still has plenty to learn. A right-back by nature, he has been stuck behind England international Kyle Walker at White Hart Lane.
Football writer Cristian Nyari likes his chances of playing at the Stadium of Light better than with Spurs:
Roker Report is cautiously optimistic about the move:
Yedlin could have moved to to a number of clubs, both domestic and international, and MLS Soccer previously reported there were strong links with Belgian side Anderlecht. While his chances of earning a starting spot would have been greater in Belgium, the move to the Black Cats allows him to continue developing at the Premier League level.
He'll go head-to-head with Billy Jones for the starting position at the Stadium of Light, although Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe believes he may be moving to a more advanced position:
National team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has also used Yedlin more as a midfielder than a defender in recent months, so at the very least he'll provide Sunderland with some valuable depth at multiple positions.
