Manchester United Transfer News: Marco Reus Price Turned Down, Top Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenSep 1, 2015

Manchester United reportedly enquired about the availability of Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus during recent negotiations regarding the Adnan Januzaj loan deal, but they walked away from the negotiating table when Die Schwarzgelben came up with an asking price of £60 million.

According to ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney, the Red Devils were unwilling to pay anything north of £50 million for the hugely talented but injury-prone forward, ending negotiations before they ever really began.

Dortmund are unlikely to drop their asking price anytime soon given Reus' importance to the squad. Bundesliga blogger Cristian Nyari shared this remarkable statistic:

Reus has started the season in sensational form and has already scored six goals across all club competitions, according to WhoScored.com. The 26-year-old is finally healthy again after a lengthy spell on the sideline with an ankle injury.

Unfortunately for the Germany international, injuries have become something of a regular occurrence over the last few years, particularly involving the ankles. Transfermarkt.co.uk keeps an injury database, and Reus' does not look pretty.

When healthy, he's one of the most uniquely gifted forwards in all of football, combining vision, technique and raw athleticism to devastating effects. A winger by trade, Reus tends to drift all over the pitch and be heavily involved in counter-attacks, where he can use his speed and dribbling ability to create for others or finish chances himself.

United's forwards have struggled to start the 2015-16 season, and following the news of Januzaj's loan deal, per the club's official website, and Javier Hernandez's departure to Bayer Leverkusen, per its official Twitter account, the Manchester Evening News' James Robson believes the club needs to add at least two forwards to fix the problem:

AS Monaco starlet Anthony Martial will be one of them, with the 19-year-old completing a move to Old Trafford, per the club's Twitter account. While the fee most often quoted is £36 million, it could potentially rise significantly with add-ons, per the Times' James Ducker:

The news the Red Devils are willing to pay such an absurd amount of money for an unproven teenager who is yet to make his debut for the French national team may raise a few eyebrows. But coupled with the idea the club wouldn't be willing to spend £60 million on Reus, a proven scorer with a track record of success, it will not sit well with the fans.

Reus' injury history does complicate matters; the forward has missed a lot of time in the past two seasons, making any investment a risky one. He's also not a striker, which is what United need most of all right now.

That said, it's hard to believe United wouldn't jump at the opportunity to sign him, regardless of need. Reus would slide straight into the starting XI, with Juan Mata moving into the centre to replace Januzaj and the German taking over the Spaniard's position out wide.

Injury concerns or not, Reus is a world-class talent who would instantly add pace, creativity and goals to manager Louis van Gaal's squad, and £60 million seems like fair value for a Borussia Dortmund icon who is yet to give any indication he would be interested in leaving.

United need another forward, so if the two clubs did in fact engage in talks about a potential move, expect them to continue to do so.
