WWE Night of Champions 2015: Feuds That Will Increase Excitement for Event

James MoffatSep 1, 2015

WWE calls Night of Champions the one night that "every championship in WWE is guaranteed to be up for grabs."

While the tagline sounds great, that marketing ploy doesn't make this pay-per-view any different than many others held by the company. However, there is something that will help the 2015 edition of Night of Champions go down in the record books.

It will be the first time that the legend known as Sting will compete for WWE gold.

As announced following the August 24 episode of Raw, the former WCW and TNA champion will battle Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions. It's one of three title matches booked so far, and there's still nearly three weeks to go until the event kicks off at Houston's Toyota Center.

Between the gold that will be up for grabs and continuing storylines from last month's SummerSlam, WWE fans will have plenty to get excited about by the time Night of Champions rolls around on Sunday, September 20.

Seth Rollins vs. Everybody

Seth Rollins is literally facing everybody heading into Night of Champions.

Rollins is booked to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Sting. He'll also face John Cena in a rematch for the United States Championship. Plus, as the WWE Universe saw on Raw last night, he has verbally challenged Triple H's legacy inside the squared circle.

Only Rollins could convincingly pull off headlining three separate storylines. He is a perfect character, mixing a smug demeanor with superior in-ring ability. Since beginning his feud with Cena prior to SummerSlam, Rollins has been on fire. Even his promos are crisper and pointed, with an added ferocity.

We'll get to see Rollins carry all three of these feuds. As the only one in this group to regularly appear on both Raw and SmackDown, Rollins will be front and center on all WWE TV programming. He'll have plenty of material, since he can take shots at Sting, Cena and (more subtlly) Triple H.

And speaking of Haitch: For the first time since this angle began, there is a very real possibility that fans are witnessing the backside of the Rollins-Authority story. Rollins and Stephanie McMahon showed great chemistry together in their two promos (one backstage, the other to close Raw on Monday) to advance that angle.

Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens and Cesaro will be in the ring against each other at Night of Champions. It's too good not to happen.

Since these two began their program following WWE Battleground, fans have been begging for more. Both men are favorites among the hardcore fans, while casual fans need only to watch a single bout between them to appreciate the skill they bring night in and night out.

Even in the multi-man tag team matches they've competed in, Cesaro and Owens have been the standouts. Again on Monday night, the duo were featured in the longest match of the evening (almost 16 minutes) and continued to hit spot after spot.

It might have been a reprisal of their match at SummerSlam, but it didn't matter. These two simply bring it every time they're in the ring.

WWE could make this more personal if it gave some depth to the stated angle for this feud. The story goes that Cesaro is "jealous" of Owens' accomplishments in WWE after only three months on the main roster. Were WWE to take this angle further, it could go all the way back to the pairs' days in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, when Owens defeated Cesaro for that promotion's title.

Don't hold your breath on WWE's mentioning another promotion by name on its telecasts, but exploring the history between wrestlers (even outside the confines of the company) is always a great way to add layers to an already compelling story.

Nikki Bella vs. Charlotte

The excitement between these two Divas isn't in the journey to Night of Champions or even in the match itself. It's in the speculation of when the inevitable will occur.

By the time Night of Champions rolls around, Nikki Bella will have become the longest-reigning WWE Divas champion of all time. She's only 14 days away from breaking AJ Lee's mark. Her match with Charlotte, who earned the right to challenge Nikki by winning the Beat the Clock Challenge on Raw last night, is set.

At Night of Champions, Nikki Bella's #Roadto300days will be complete. The question for WWE becomes: What happens after Night of Champions?

To provide any sort of legitimacy to Nikki Bella's reign, WWE Creative should allow her to win at Night of Champions and for some time thereafter. Not doing so is a smack in the face to one of the company's greatest Divas of all time, just so the company can claim the upper hand in its longstanding dispute with AJ's husband, CM Punk.

Let Charlotte or Becky Lynch or Sasha Banks take the title off her on Raw in October or at Hell in a Cell.  Give us a heel turn for Paige, or bring three of The Four Horsewomen together to run roughshod over the entire Divas division.

WWE needs to get the fans invested in these women. Otherwise, if WWE unceremoniously dumps Nikki's title reign down the drain the first chance it gets after the record is broken, the supposed Divas Revolution will be all for naught—just another Vince McMahon marketing ploy.
