Sunday Recap

Southampton set the tone early in their match with Norwich, as James Ward-Prowse forced an excellent save from John Ruddy with a curling free-kick after just two minutes.

The Saints continued to push forward in numbers as the Canaries hung on, but Norwich's chances of holding off the home side quickly evaporated when Steven Whittaker was sent off after half an hour for two needless yellow cards.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 30: Steven Whittaker of Norwich City leaves the field after being sent off by referee Jonathan Moss during the Barclays Premier League match between Southampton and Norwich City at St Mary's Stadium on August 30, 2015 in Sou

First, he blocked Matt Targett as he attempted to take a quick throw-in and just three minutes later was sent walking after pulling back Dusan Tadic.

With 10 men Norwich actually looked more stable for a time as they got back behind the ball, but Southampton deservedly broke the deadlock in first-half injury time through Graziano Pelle. Sadio Mane provided the cross from the right, with the Italian duly sweeping home at the near post.

Squawka Football demonstrated Southampton's dominance in the opening period:

The second half started much like the first as the Saints chased a second goal. Midway through the half, they were rewarded for their persistence when Mane again whipped in a dangerous cross, this time for Tadic to curl in.

The Telegraph's Liam was impressed with the winger's display:

Tadic grabbed his brace just three minutes later when he pounced on a rebound from Pelle's header after some neat play between Mane and Cedric Soares on the right, which rounded off the win on a difficult afternoon for the visitors.

In the later match, United were dealt a timely reminder of their need to add more firepower up front before the transfer window closes.

The Red Devils took the lead through Juan Mata, who crashed home the impressive Luke Shaw's cross early in the second half.

Manager Garry Monk's side responded magnificently, however, and pulled level shortly after as Andre Ayew scored an excellent header from Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross.

Ayew then fed Bafetimbi Gomis minutes later with a delightful pass, and the Frenchman made no mistake in tucking the ball past the on-rushing Sergio Romero.

Squawka Football highlighted the new signing's impressive performance, continuing his excellent start to life in Wales:

The Red Devils were clearly rattled by the rapid turnaround and struggled to create anything noteworthy as they sought an equaliser.

The Telegraph's Liam took United's ongoing struggles in the final third as a clear sign that more recruitment will be needed for the Red Devils to challenge for the title:

Unfortunately for United fans, manager Louis van Gaal appears not to recognise United's lack of depth up front. According to Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News, Van Gaal told Sky Sports:

"

Swansea changed their shape. We couldn't cope with that and that's not good. I think we controlled the game and played very good. You have to be compact. We didn't have the sense to do that. You see the game, we could have scored many more goals. The result doesn't have had any effect on the transfer policy. We are not panicking.

"

In their next match at Old TraffordUnited face Liverpool, who have problems of their own after losing 3-0 to West Ham United on Saturday.

Though Van Gaal is right to not panic by buying a player who might not work out, it remains as clear now as it has throughout the summer that United must sign a forward before the window closes or else their domestic and European dreams will have to be put on hold for another year.
