Valentino Rossi took the lead at the summit of the MotoGP rider standings as he secured a memorable victory at the British Grand Prix.
The Yamaha man capitalised on poor days for fellow contenders Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez to race to a win at a rainy Silverstone, his fourth of the 2015 season. Ducati riders Danilo Petrucci and Andrea Dovizioso finished in second and third place, respectively, making it an all-Italian podium on Sunday.
BT Sport MotoGP captured Rossi's winning moment, which puts him 12 points clear of Lorenzo:

Rossi Keeps his Cool at Silverstone

The British Grand Prix is one of the most illustrious on the calendar and as we can see here courtesy of BT Sport’s Jake Humphrey, one of the biggest names in show business had made the trip to Silverstone to take in the action:
As the riders went out on their formation lap, the drama began in earnest. All the competitors dived for the pits as the rain tumbled down and as such, the start was red-flagged and subsequently pushed back 20 minutes.
When the action got underway, it was a far from ideal start for the two front-runners, as both Marquez and Lorenzo lost initial ground to Rossi. Lorenzo was struggling for rhythm in the early stages, but Honda’s world champion gradually worked his way back toward the front, nestling into second place behind Rossi.

Lorenzo was in third but being put under major pressure by Cal Crutchlow and Jack Miller. The Spaniard was handed a massive stroke of fortune however, as the Honda pair conspired to take each other out, per the MotoGP Twitter feed:
Nevertheless, in a scenario similar to Assen earlier in the year, Marquez and Rossi continued to move clear at the front. The former was stalking the legendary Italian with ominous intent, but in a season riddled with rudimentary errors from the double world champion, another was forthcoming.

With just six laps to go, Marquez lost control of the rear at Turn 1 and crashed, putting him completely out of contention. As we can see here courtesy of BT Sport MotoGP, it was a pretty innocuous incident:
It gave Rossi what looked like an insurmountable lead in the final few laps at Silverstone, but Petrucci clearly sensed a massive opportunity and upped the ante. The Yamaha man’s lead quickly came down over the next few laps and suddenly, his compatriot was all over the back of him with just a couple of laps remaining.
But Rossi drew on every sinew of experience he has to preserve the gap to the rampant Ducati rider. Dovizioso eventually got the better of Lorenzo to take third position and that was the icing on the cake for the Rossi, who will surely fancy his chances of securing a remarkable 10th world title now.
Superbikes legend Carl Fogarty paid tribute to the man affectionately known as “the doctor” in the aftermath of his latest win:
Rossi admitted afterwards he did get a little complacent after Marquez's error. "When I saw Marc I slowed down but in the end this is MotoGP, you can't relax," he said, per crash.net. "I hope that Danilo don't risk too much because it's his first podium. I had to concentrate and rode very smooth. My bike was great and I enjoy very much."

The improved performances of Marquez and Lorenzo have heaped some pressure on Rossi in recent weeks. The Italian has been leading the standings throughout the season, but there were worries from his supporters that he could potentially relinquish the top spot at Silverstone.
But as he’s done so often throughout his storied career, Rossi kept his head while others around him became flustered. Despite some poor qualifying performances, he remains the standout man when it comes to race day and with a trip to San Marino to come, where he was so impressive in victory last season, it’s tough to see Lorenzo immediately reeling him in.
