American Pharoah at Travers Stakes 2015: Finishing Time and Prize Money

Mike ChiariAug 29, 2015

In his second race since winning the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah was shocked by the late-charging Keen Ice and forced to settle for a second-place result.

The Bob Baffert-trained colt battled Frosted for much of the race and seemed to have shaken the game challenger, but Keen Ice was able to take advantage of the fact that American Pharoah used up so much energy trying to hold the lead.

Here is a closer look at the win, place and show results, complete with the finishing times and the prize money that the top three finishers will take home from Saratoga Springs, New York:

Triple Crown winners have had a notoriously tough time coming through at the so-called "Graveyard of Champions," as only one horse has managed to pull off the sweep, according to ESPN's John Buccigross:

American Pharoah had already proved to be a transcendent horse ahead of the Travers, which is why he was heavily favored to come out on top.

Per Tim Wilkin of the Albany Times-Union, Keen Ice trainer Dale Romans figured his horse and the rest of the field needed a lucky break to unseat the dominant American Pharoah:

"

I am sure that everyone in this race probably feels they have the second-best 3-year-old. There might be one (trainer) that is arrogant enough to think they are better than Pharoah, but I don't know who that would be. If (American Pharoah) doesn't stub his toes, he is head and shoulders the best horse in the crop. ... Something has to go wrong for any of us to beat him. These horses are all organic. Things can go wrong. They aren't like a car, where you can change tires and go onto the next race.

"

While there was no indication anything was wrong with American Pharoah at any point in the race, Romans' horse was fortunate that Frosted was so aggressive.

According to Eric Crawford of WDRB, Baffert didn't believe his horse was at his best:

Despite the disappointment, Katherine Terrell of the Times-Picayune is among those who believe American Pharoah's place in history is cemented:

The result wasn't what most American Pharoah supporters and horse racing fans in general were expecting, but there may be more opportunities for the legendary horse to add to his already-impressive list of accolades.

It is possible Baffert could enter American Pharoah in the Breeders' Cup Classic, which is arguably the most important event in horse racing.

He'll need to run better than he did at the Travers, but if he returns to top form and manages to bounce back, Saturday's loss will be merely a footnote in an otherwise great career.
