Mayweather vs. Berto: Highlights, Reaction for Showtime All-Access Episode 1

Joseph ZuckerAug 28, 2015

The first episode of Showtime's All Access: Mayweather vs. Berto had a little bit of everything Monday night.

The cameras caught a few tender moments between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his children, but in case boxing fans thought Mayweather might have gone a bit soft as he looks to hang up his gloves, the 38-year-old was also shown hitting a heavy bag with a brick of cash cradled in his right arm (via Showtime Sports):

Given the amount of skepticism thrown Mayweather's way after his decision to fight Andre Berto, this season of All Access will be particularly important with regard to building up anticipation to the bout on Sept. 12.

While Mayweather was undoubtedly the focus of All Access Monday night, Berto got plenty of screen time. The show flashed back to 2011 when Berto was on the verge of a fight with Mayweather before a loss to Victor Ortiz derailed those plans.

Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook argues Ortiz is still coasting off the fumes of that victory:

That defeat began what would be a 3-3 run for Berto before he received his date with Mayweather.

While it's fair to question whether the 31-year-old is a viable challenger for Mayweather, his animosity toward Mayweather—or at least's Mayweather's entourage—was evident during Monday's show. Assembled members of the Mayweather camp began throwing verbal jabs at Berto during a promotional photo shoot.

Before Berto got too heated, Mayweather stepped in to defuse the situation.

From there, the episode shifted to the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, where a seemingly perpetually sweaty Mayweather was shown going through his grueling training process. Say what you want about his in-ring style, but there's no question he has worked hard to become one of the best fighters of his generation.

Although Mayweather remains without a peer in a boxing ring, the same can't be said of him on a basketball court. Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas showed up to one of Mayweather's workouts, which led to the two stars going head-to-head on the hardwood.

Despite playing in front of a decidedly pro-Mayweather group of fans, Thomas and his teammates prevailed. Before Monday's episode went to air, Showtime Sports shared some of the highlights of Mayweather and Thomas' duel. (Warning: Video contains NSFW language.)

Once back in the gym, Mayweather took a bit of a backseat to let one of his security guards step in the ring. Mayweather explained said security guard had begged him for a chance to show off his skills, so he found a somewhat inexperienced sparring partner.

As BlackSportsOnline's Robert Littal tweeted, the guard probably shouldn't quit his day job:

The first episode of All Access undoubtedly featured the requisite balance of pre-fight hype and general entertainment. In addition, the cameras got a different side of the divisive champion, who once again reiterated Friday he will retire after fighting Berto, per Sky Sports.

It would appear he is getting a bit nostalgic as he sees the end of his in-ring career. Monday's show opened with Mayweather and his family looking back at old pictures and closed with his uncle getting inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.

Family was a thread running throughout the episode, as Mayweather explained nearing retirement has allowed him to build a stronger relationship with his children. Once he does hang up the gloves, he told the Showtime cameras he will spend each and every moment with his kids.

While Mayweather would appear content to ride off into the sunset in September, it still wouldn't surprise you if he stayed just long enough to collect one more big payday and beat Rocky Marciano's 49-match unbeaten streak.

For now, it's evident from All Access that Mayweather is focusing all of his attention on Berto, and he seems determined not to fall victim to one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
