England vs. Australia, Only T20: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Rob LancasterAug 29, 2015

After all the drama of the Ashes, England and Australia now switch their focus to limited-overs cricket, starting with Monday's one-off Twenty20 encounter in Cardiff, Wales.

England will want to build on their impressive performances earlier this summer against New Zealand, when they defeated the Black Caps 3-2 in the ODI series before also winning the solitary T20 fixture.

Australia, though, will seek a little revenge after failing to hang on to the miniature urn. They are led by Steven Smith, who has taken over the captaincy in all formats following the international retirement of Michael Clarke.

Date: Monday, Aug. 31, 2015

Time: 3 p.m. (local), 10 a.m. (EST)

Venue: The Swalec Stadium, Cardiff, Wales

Live Stream and TV Info: Sky Sports (UK), Nine Network (Australia), SKY Sport (New Zealand), SuperSport (South Africa), STAR Sport (India), NowTV (UK Streaming Service)

Weather: According to BBC Weather, the forecast does not look good for Monday. Rain will be an issue, with the downpours heavy at times. At least a strong wind could help dry the sodden ground out.

Overview

Australia have an influx of fresh faces as they bid to bounce back from their Ashes disappointment.

From the Test squad, only new skipper Smith, Pat Cummins, who was called up to replace the injured Ryan Harris early on in the tour, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, David Warner and Shane Watson remain.

However, the rest of the party includes some names that will be familiar to England supporters—George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell have recently been playing county cricket, for Sussex and Yorkshire respectively.

Joe Burns has also appeared for Middlesex this summer—he opened the batting alongside Warner in the one-off ODI against Ireland in Belfast on Thursday, a rain-affected match Australia won by 23 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Marcus Stoinis did not feature against the Irish, but the all-rounder could make his international debut on Monday, according to Samuel Ferris on Twitter:

The visitors are, though, without the services of Aaron Finch. The batsman captained his country in their last T20 outing, against South Africa last November, but he is ruled out after breaking a bone in his foot.

Australia have won seven of the 12 T20 meetings against England, including sweeping the three-match series on home soil in 2014.

However, England defeated their oldest rivals at home the previous year, with opener Alex Hales making 94 in the 27-run victory at Chester-le-Street, Durham in August 2013.

Eoin Morgan's side have also won their last two outings in the format, beating India at the end of last summer before seeing off New Zealand in June.

Joe Root played in both victories, but the Yorkshireman will not feature for the home side during the rest of the summer.

Having played a starring role in England’s Ashes triumph, scoring 460 runs at an average of 57.50 to pick up the Compton-Miller medal as player of the series, the batsman has been given a break.

Bob Willis believes team management have made the right decision, writing in his Sky Sports blog: "England will be mindful of the workload they are placing on Joe, arguably their best player, definitely their Test captain in waiting and someone who will be a major part of the team's busy autumn and winter in the UAE."

While Root is resting ahead of a busy winter, Ashes winners Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn and Ben Stokes could all be involved in the Welsh capital.

James Vince may get to fill the void left by Root’s absence. The batsman made 69 for his county, Hampshire, in domestic action on Saturday, in the process impressing ex-England captain Michael Vaughan.

After the one-off T20, a five-match ODI series between the teams gets underway in Southampton, England on September 3.

Key players

England

Eoin Morgan hardly comes into the T20 game with runs under his belt—he has not played since August 1, having been allowed to take a break by his county after a string of low scores.

Middlesex's managing director Angus Fraser said of the decision to grant the batsman a sabbatical, per ESPN Cricinfo: "We believe a week or two away from cricket will allow him to recharge and to play the cricket he wants for the remainder of the season."

Refreshed and ready to go again, Morgan will hope to return in style with a big performance against Australia. However, he has never made a half-century against them in eight previous appearances.

Australia

Compared to his numbers in Test and ODI cricket, Steve Smith has yet to fire in the shortest format for Australia.

The right-handed batsman so far averages a rather paltry 14 in 21 appearances, though since October 2011 he has only played in one T20 fixture for his country.

Now, however, Smith is the new man at the helm. He will want to put an immediate stamp on the team, particularly with the ICC World Twenty20 coming up in March next year in India.
