Jordan Spieth Misses Cut at the Barclays 2015: Latest Comments, Reaction
Jordan Spieth has had a spectacular 2015 season that saw him shoot up to the world's No. 1 ranking after the PGA Championship two weeks ago. But his reign as the world's best golfer has been cut abruptly short after he missed the cut at The Barclays by shooting a seven-over overall after the first two rounds.
ESPN's Jason Sobel explains:
Spieth could not recover from a first round on Thursday that saw him shoot a four-over. A disastrous start saw him at four over after his first three holes, including a double bogey on No. 3. He sank to six over at the end of the front nine, taking back a pair of strokes with two birdies on his final nine holes.
It was a day that Spieth described as "very off," according to Steve DiMeglio of USA Today:
"A little bit of rust with wedges combined with some poor decision making and it just came out of nowhere. Normally when I’m running that good, it doesn’t turn like that. So it was really a very unique round for this year. ... I’m just going to take today as a fluke round.
"
The fluky play continued Friday, as his second round did not go much better. Five bogies and a double-bogey canceled out four birdies, as a two-over on the day could not get him close to reaching the cut line. His double-bogey came on the 12th hole when he was hit with a one-stroke penalty after coming in contact with his ball.
The Golf Channel's Justin Ray shed some light on a historic day, though it was mired in mediocrity:
Spieth took to the mic after being cut and spoke of how he'll move forward, per Sobel:
"I've reached that peak already, and I know it's going to be close enough to where if I just get the job done next week, I'll be back in that ranking. That ranking, it's great once you reach it, but it's not something that I'm going to live or die on each week.
"
If the past season tells the golfing world anything, it is that Spieth should be back and challenging for that No. 1 spot again. The 2015 Masters and U.S. Open champion, who was unstoppable earlier this season, has won a total of four events this year and holds a large lead in the FedEx Cup standings. All signs point to him having a very long, prosperous career ahead of him in which he and Rory McIlroy will be battling for honors as the game's best.
